Chapter on the First Mosque Established on Earth and the Virtue of Building Mosques
Hadith 1316
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا عَفَّانُ ثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ وَسُلَيْمَانُ الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: كُنْتُ أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِ وَيَعْرِضُ عَلَيَّ وَقَالَ أَبُو عَوَانَةَ: كُنْتُ أَقْرَأُ عَلَيْهِ وَيَقْرَأُ عَلَيَّ فِي السِّكَّةِ فَيَمُرُّ بِالسَّجْدَةِ فَيَسْجُدُ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: أَتَسْجُدُ فِي السِّكَّةِ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، سَمِعْتُ أَبَا ذَرٍّ يَقُولُ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! أَيُّ مَسْجِدٍ وُضِعَ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَوَّلًا؟ قَالَ: ((الْمَسْجِدُ الْحَرَامُ)) قَالَ: قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ: ((ثُمَّ الْمَسْجِدُ الْأَقْصَى)) قَالَ: قُلْتُ: كَمْ بَيْنَهُمَا؟ قَالَ: ((أَرْبَعُونَ سَنَةً)) ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((أَيْنَمَا أَدْرَكَتْكَ الصَّلَاةُ فَصَلِّ فَإِنَّهُ مَسْجِدٌ، وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ فَكُلُّهَا مَسْجِدٌ))
Abu Awanah says: While walking in the street, I would recite the Qur'an to Ibrahim Taimi and he to me. When Ibrahim recited a verse of prostration, he would perform prostration. I said: Do you perform prostration in the street? He said: Yes! I heard from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Which mosque was built first on the earth? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Al-Masjid al-Haram. I said: Then which one? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then Al-Masjid al-Aqsa. I said: What was the time span between the two? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Forty years. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Wherever prayer overtakes you, pray there, for that is a mosque. And in another narration: The whole earth is a mosque.
Hadith 1317
عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((مَنْ بَنَى لِلَّهِ مَسْجِدًا يُذْكَرُ فِيهِ اسْمُ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ بِهِ بَيْتًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever builds a mosque for Allah in which Allah is remembered, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise in return.
Hadith 1318
عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((مَنْ بَنَى لِلَّهِ مَسْجِدًا بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ مِثْلَهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ))
Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house like it in Paradise.
Hadith 1319
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ (عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَنْ بَنَى لِلَّهِ مَسْجِدًا بُنِيَ لَهُ بَيْتٌ أَوْسَعُ مِنْهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ))
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, a house more spacious than it will be built for him in Paradise.
Hadith 1320
وَعَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ يَزِيدَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلُهُ
Sayyida Asma bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated a similar hadith from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 1321
وَعَنْ بِشْرِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ قَالَ: جَاءَ وَاثِلَةُ بْنُ الْأَسْقَعِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَنَحْنُ نَبْنِي مَسْجِدَنَا، قَالَ: فَوَقَفَ عَلَيْنَا فَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((مَنْ بَنَى لِلَّهِ مَسْجِدًا يُصَلَّى فِيهِ بَنَى اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ أَفْضَلَ مِنْهُ)) قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ هَيْثَمِ بْنِ خَارِجَةَ
Bishr bin Hayan says: We were building our mosque when Sayyiduna Wathilah bin Asqa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us, greeted us with salam, and said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever builds a mosque for Allah in which prayers are offered, Allah Almighty builds for him a house in Paradise better than it.
Hadith 1322
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: ((مَنْ بَنَى لِلَّهِ مَسْجِدًا وَلَوْ كَمَفْحَصِ قَطَاةٍ لِبَيْضِهَا بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ بَيْتًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, even if it is as small as the nest where a dove lays its eggs, Allah Almighty will build a house for him in Paradise."
Hadith 1323
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَبَسَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَنْ بَنَى لِلَّهِ مَسْجِدًا لِيُذْكَرَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِيهِ بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ بَيْتًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَمَنْ أَعْتَقَ نَفْسًا مُسْلِمَةً كَانَتْ فِدْيَتَهُ مِنْ جَهَنَّمَ، وَمَنْ شَابَ شَيْبَةً فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ كَانَتْ لَهُ نُورًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever builds a mosque for Allah so that Allah’s name will be mentioned therein, Allah will build a house for him in Paradise. And whoever frees a Muslim slave, it will be a ransom for him from Hell. And whoever grows old in the way of Allah, that old age will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection.
