The freed slave of the Messenger of Allah, Sayyiduna Abu Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) heard the mu’adhdhin (caller to prayer), he would repeat what he said. When the mu’adhdhin reached “Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah,” the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) would say: “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rabee’ah Salmi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey. He (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a mu’adhdhin saying: “Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah,” so he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: “Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah.” Then when the mu’adhdhin said: “Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah,” he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Ashhadu anni Muhammadan Rasulullah.” Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You will find him to be a shepherd of goats or someone who has gone far from his family.” Abdullah bin Rabee’ah says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) descended into a valley, he passed by a (dead) kid of a goat that had been thrown away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do you consider this insignificant in the eyes of its owners? (That is why they threw it away.) Surely, this world is even more insignificant in the sight of Allah than this kid is to its owners.”

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to hear the caller to prayer (mu'adhdhin), he would say: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila narrates that when Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the muezzin giving the adhan, he would repeat exactly what the muezzin said, and when the muezzin said "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah" and "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah," Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) would also say "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah" and "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah," but along with this he would also say: ((WA INNA ALLADHINA JAHADU MUHAMMADAN HUM AL-KADHIBUN)) "Indeed, those who denied Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) are the liars."

Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever, upon hearing the muezzin, recites this supplication: ((And I also bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. We are pleased with Allah as Lord, with Muhammad as Messenger, and with Islam as religion.)) … then his sins are forgiven.
Hadith 1288
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you hear the muezzin, then say as he says, then send blessings upon me, because whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah Almighty sends ten mercies upon him. After that, ask Allah to grant me al-Wasilah, for it is a rank in Paradise which is fitting for only one of Allah’s servants, and I hope that I am that servant. Whoever asks al-Wasilah for me, my intercession will become lawful for him.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Will the mu’adhdhins surpass us in virtue because of their calls to prayer? Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the high hills of Yemen.
