بَابٌ فِي وَعِيدِ مَنْ تَهَاوَنَ بِأَمْرِ الصَّلَاةِ أَوْ أَخَّرَهَا عَنْ وَقْتِهَا
Chapter on the Warning Against Neglecting Prayer or Delaying It from Its Time
Hadith 1075
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ثَنَا خَارِجَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مِنْ وَلَدِ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: انْصَرَفْنَا مِنَ الظُّهْرِ مَعَ خَارِجَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَى أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ: يَا جَارِيَةُ! انْظُرِي هَلْ حَانَتِ الصَّلَاةُ؟ قَالَتْ: نَعَمْ، فَقُلْنَا لَهُ: إِنَّمَا انْصَرَفْنَا مِنَ الظُّهْرِ الْآنَ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ، قَالَ: فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى الْعَصْرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ: هَٰكَذَا كَانَ يُصَلِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Abdullah bin Sulaiman bin Zaid bin Thabit says: After finishing the Zuhr prayer, we went with Kharijah bin Zaid to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: Girl! See, has the time for prayer arrived? She said: Yes. So we said to him: We have just finished offering Zuhr with the Imam. Nevertheless, he performed the Asr prayer and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray like this.
Hadith 1076
عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: انْصَرَفْتُ مِنَ الظُّهْرِ أَنَا وَعُمَرُ حِينَ صَلَّاهَا هِشَامُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بِالنَّاسِ إِذْ كَانَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ إِلَى عَمْرِو بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ نَعُودُهُ فِي شَكْوَى لَهُ، قَالَ: فَمَا قَعَدْنَا، مَا سَأَلْنَا عَنْهُ إِلَّا قِيَامًا، قَالَ: ثُمَّ انْصَرَفْنَا فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَى أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ فِي دَارِهِ وَهِيَ إِلَى جَنْبِ دَارِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، قَالَ: فَلَمَّا قَعَدْنَا أَتَتْهُ الْجَارِيَةُ فَقَالَتْ: الصَّلَاةَ يَا أَبَا حَمْزَةَ! قَالَ: قُلْنَا: أَيُّ الصَّلَاةِ رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ؟ قَالَ: الْعَصْرُ، قَالَ: فَقُلْنَا: إِنَّمَا صَلَّيْنَا الظُّهْرَ الْآنَ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ: إِنَّكُمْ تَرَكْتُمُ الصَّلَاةَ حَتَّى نَسِيتُمُوهَا، أَوْ قَالَ: نُسِّيتُمُوهَا حَتَّى تَرَكْتُمُوهَا، إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((بُعِثْتُ أَنَا وَالسَّاعَةُ كَهَاتَيْنِ)) وَمَدَّ إِصْبَعَهُ السَّبَّابَةَ وَالْوُسْطَى
Mawla Ibn Abbas, Ziyad bin Abi Ziyad says: Umar and I finished the Zuhr prayer, the governor of Madinah, Hisham bin Ismail, had led the prayer. Then we went to visit Amr bin Abdullah bin Abi Talha to inquire about his health, as he was ill. We did not sit with him, but standing, we asked about his condition, and then we returned from there and went to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) at his house. His house was next to Abu Talha's house. While we were sitting with him, a girl came and said: Abu Hamzah! Pray the prayer. We said: May Allah have mercy on you, which prayer? She said: The Asr prayer. We said: We have just now prayed the Zuhr prayer. She said: You have neglected the prayer to the extent that you have forgotten it, or she said: The prayer has been so neglected that you have forgotten it. I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: I and the Hour have been sent like these two fingers (bringing them close together). Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his index and middle fingers and gestured with them.
Hadith 1077
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((ثَلَاثَةٌ يَا عَلِيُّ لَا تُؤَخِّرُهُنَّ، الصَّلَاةَ إِذَا أَتَتْ وَالْجَنَازَةَ إِذَا حَضَرَتْ وَالْأَيِّمَ إِذَا وَجَدْتَ كُفُوًا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ali! Do not delay three things: the prayer when its time arrives, the funeral when it is present, and the marriage of a woman who has no husband, when you find a suitable man for her.
Hadith 1078
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ الرَّجُلَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ فُلَانًا نَامَ الْبَارِحَةَ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((ذَاكَ الشَّيْطَانُ بَالَ فِي أُذُنِهِ، أَوْ فِي أُذُنَيْهِ))
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Indeed, so-and-so slept through the night and did not pray. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Satan urinated in that man's ears.
Hadith 1079
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلُهُ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (ra) has also narrated a similar type of Prophetic hadith.
Hadith 1080
عَنْ شَدَّادِ بْنِ أَوْسٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: ((سَيَكُونُ مِنْ بَعْدِي أَئِمَّةٌ يُمِيتُونَ الصَّلَاةَ عَنْ مَوَاقِيتِهَا، فَصَلُّوا الصَّلَاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا وَاجْعَلُوا صَلَاتَكُمْ مَعَهُمْ سُبْحَةً))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: After me, there will be rulers who will delay the prayer from its appointed time, so you should perform the prayer at its proper time, and consider the prayer performed with them as voluntary.
Hadith 1081
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عَاصِمُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((إِنَّهَا سَتَكُونُ مِنْ بَعْدِي أُمَرَاءُ يُصَلُّونَ الصَّلَاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا وَيُؤَخِّرُونَهَا عَنْ وَقْتِهَا، فَصَلُّوهَا مَعَهُمْ، فَإِنْ صَلَّوْهَا لِوَقْتِهَا وَصَلَّيْتُمُوهَا مَعَهُمْ فَلَكُمْ وَلَهُمْ وَإِنْ أَخَّرُوهَا عَنْ وَقْتِهَا فَصَلَّيْتُمُوهَا مَعَهُمْ فَلَكُمْ وَعَلَيْهِمْ، مَنْ فَارَقَ الْجَمَاعَةَ مَاتَ مِيتَةً جَاهِلِيَّةً، وَمَنْ نَكَثَ الْعَهْدَ وَمَاتَ نَاكِثًا لِلْعَهْدِ جَاءَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ لَا حُجَّةَ لَهُ)) قُلْتُ لَهُ: مَنْ أَخْبَرَكَ هَٰذَا الْخَبَرَ؟ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِيهِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَامِرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَامِرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، يُخْبِرُ عَامِرُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Asim bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, after me, soon there will come such rulers who will sometimes perform the prayer at its appointed time and sometimes delay it beyond its time. So, if they perform the prayer at its appointed time and you also pray with them, then the reward will be for both you and them. But if they delay the prayer beyond its time and you also pray with them, then you will receive the reward, but the burden (sin) will be upon them. Whoever separates from the congregation will die the death of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), and whoever breaks the covenant will die as one who breaks the covenant, and on the Day of Resurrection, he will come in such a state that he will have no argument in his favor.
Hadith 1082
عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: بَيْنَمَا أَنَا جَالِسٌ فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُسْنِدِي ظَهْرِي إِلَى قِبْلَةِ مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَبْعَةُ رَهْطٍ، أَرْبَعَةٌ مَوَالِينَا وَثَلَاثَةٌ مِنْ عَرَبِنَا، إِذْ خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ: ((مَا يُجْلِسُكُمْ هَاهُنَا؟)) قُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! نَنْتَظِرُ الصَّلَاةَ، قَالَ: فَأَرَمَّ قَلِيلًا ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ: ((أَتَدْرُونَ مَا يَقُولُ رَبُّكُمْ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ؟)) قَالَ: قُلْنَا: اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، قَالَ: ((فَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمْ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ: مَنْ صَلَّى الصَّلَاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا وَحَافَظَ عَلَيْهَا وَلَمْ يُضَيِّعْهَا اسْتِخْفَافًا بِحَقِّهَا فَلَهُ عَلَيَّ عَهْدٌ أَنْ أُدْخِلَهُ الْجَنَّةَ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يُصَلِّهَا لِوَقْتِهَا وَلَمْ يُحَافِظْ عَلَيْهَا وَضَيَّعَهَا اسْتِخْفَافًا بِحَقِّهَا فَلَا عَهْدَ لَهُ، إِنْ شِئْتُ عَذَّبْتُهُ وَإِنْ شِئْتُ غَفَرْتُ لَهُ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka’b bin ‘Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was sitting in the Prophet’s Mosque, we were seven people sitting leaning against the Qiblah wall of this mosque, four of us were slaves and we three were Arabs, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us, until he reached us, it was the time of Zuhr prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What has made you sit here? We said: O Messenger of Allah! We are waiting for the prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent for a little while, then raised his blessed head and said: Do you know what your Lord says? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, your Lord says: Whoever performs the prayer on time and completely safeguards it and does not neglect it considering its right insignificant, then for him there is a covenant upon Me that I will admit him to Paradise. And whoever does not perform the prayer on time and does not completely safeguard it and neglects it considering its right insignificant, then there is no covenant from Me for him; if I wish, I will punish him and if I wish, I will forgive him.
Hadith 1083
عَنْ أَبِي يَسْرٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ كَعْبِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ صَاحِبِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُصَلِّي الصَّلَاةَ كَامِلَةً وَمِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُصَلِّي النِّصْفَ وَالثُّلُثَ وَالرُّبُعَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ الْعُشْرَ))
It is narrated from the Companion of the Messenger, Sayyiduna Abu Yasar Ka'b bin Amr Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Among you, some people perform the complete prayer, some perform half of it, some a third, and some a quarter, ... until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached a tenth part.
Hadith 1084
عَنْ نَوْفَلِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَنْ فَاتَتْهُ الصَّلَاةُ فَكَأَنَّمَا وُتِرَ أَهْلُهُ وَمَالُهُ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Naufal bin Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Whoever misses his prayer, it is as if his family and wealth have been taken away from him.
Hadith 1085
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ: مَا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الصَّلَاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا الْآخِرِ مَرَّتَيْنِ حَتَّى قَبَضَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not perform the prayer at its last time twice before Allah Almighty caused him (peace and blessings be upon him) to pass away.
