بَابُ جَوَازِ مُبَاشَرَةِ الْحَائِضِ فِيمَا فَوْقَ الْإِزَارِ وَمُضَاجَعَتِهَا وَمُؤَاكَلَتِهَا
Chapter on the Permissibility of Physical Contact with a Menstruating Woman Above the Waistcloth, Lying with Her, and Eating with Her
Hadith 937
عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُبَاشِرُ نِسَاءَهُ فَوْقَ الْإِزَارِ وَهُنَّ حُيَّضٌ
It is narrated from Sayyida Maymunah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would use the upper part of his wives' lower garment while they were in the state of menstruation.
Hadith 938
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلُهُ
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) has also narrated a similar hadith of the Prophet.
Hadith 939
عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُ إِحْدَانَا إِذَا حَاضَتْ تَأْتَزِرُ ثُمَّ يُبَاشِرُهَا
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: When any of us would be menstruating, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would instruct her to tie a waist-wrapper, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would join his body with her body.
Hadith 940
عَنْ أَبِي مَيْسَرَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُبَاشِرُنِي وَأَنَا حَائِضٌ وَيَدْخُلُ مَعِيَ فِي لِحَافِي وَأَنَا حَائِضٌ وَلَكِنْ كَانَ أَمْلَكَكُمْ لِإِرْبِهِ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to touch his body with my body while I was menstruating, and he would enter my blanket with me while I was menstruating, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) had greater control over his private parts.
Hadith 941
عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ يَأْمُرُنِي فَأَتَّزِرُ وَأَنَا حَائِضٌ ثُمَّ يُبَاشِرُنِي، وَكُنْتُ أَغْسِلُ رَأْسَهُ وَهُوَ مُعْتَكِفٌ وَأَنَا حَائِضٌ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (RA), she says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would instruct me to tie my lower garment, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would lie down with me while I was menstruating. And when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the state of i'tikaf, I would comb his (peace and blessings be upon him) hair while I was menstruating.
Hadith 942
عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كُنْتُ أَنَامُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى فِرَاشٍ وَأَنَا حَائِضٌ وَعَلَيَّ ثَوْبٌ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: I used to sleep on the bedding with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was menstruating, but there was a cloth over me.
Hadith 943
عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ بَابَنُوسَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَتَوَشَّحُنِي وَيَنَالُ مِنْ رَأْسِي وَأَنَا حَائِضٌ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to embrace me and kiss my head and so on, while I was menstruating.
Hadith 944
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُجَاوِرُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَيُصْغِي إِلَيَّ رَأْسَهُ فَأُرَجِّلُهُ وَأَنَا حَائِضٌ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to be in the state of i'tikaf in the mosque and would lean his blessed head towards me, so I would comb his (peace and blessings be upon him) hair while I was menstruating.
Hadith 945
وَعَنْهَا أَيْضًا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الرَّجُلِ يُبَاشِرُ امْرَأَتَهُ وَهِيَ حَائِضٌ، قَالَ: ((لَهُ مَا فَوْقَ الْإِزَارِ))
It is also narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He may use the part above the izar (waist-wrapper). This statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is regarding the person who brings his body in contact with the body of his menstruating wife.
Hadith 946
عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ (زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُبَاشِرُ الْمَرْأَةَ مِنْ نِسَائِهِ وَهِيَ حَائِضٌ، إِذَا كَانَ عَلَيْهَا إِزَارٌ يَبْلُغُ أَنْصَافَ الْفَخِذَيْنِ أَوِ الرُّكْبَتَيْنِ مُحْتَجِزَةً بِهِ
It is narrated from the wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to join his body with the body of his wives who were menstruating, while there was (at least) such a lower garment on her that reached halfway down the thighs or up to the knees, and she would thus protect (the private area) with it.
Hadith 947
عَنِ ابْنِ قُرَيْظَةَ الصَّدَفِيِّ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِعَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا: أَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُضَاجِعُكِ وَأَنْتِ حَائِضٌ؟ قَالَتْ: نَعَمْ، إِذَا شَدَدْتُ عَلَيَّ إِزَارِي وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَنَا إِذْ ذَاكَ إِلَّا فِرَاشٌ وَاحِدٌ، فَلَمَّا رَزَقَنِي اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِرَاشًا آخَرَ اعْتَزَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Ibn Qurayza Sadafi says: I asked Sayyida Aisha (RA): When you were menstruating, would the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lie down with you? She said: Yes, but when I would fasten the waist-wrapper tightly around myself, and at that time our bedding was just one. When Allah Almighty gave us another bedding, then in that state I would separate myself from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 948
عَنْ جُمَيْعِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ التَّيْمِيِّ قَالَ: انْطَلَقْتُ مَعَ عَمَّتِي وَخَالَتِي إِلَى عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَسَأَلْتُهَا: كَيْفَ كَانَتْ إِحْدَاكُنَّ تَصْنَعُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا عَرَكَتْ؟ فَقَالَتْ: كَانَ إِذَا كَانَ ذَلِكَ مِنْ إِحْدَانَا، اتَّزَرَتْ بِالْإِزَارِ الْوَاسِعِ ثُمَّ الْتَزَمَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِيَدَيْهَا وَنَحْرِهَا
Jamee’ bin Umair Ta’imi says: I went to Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) with my paternal and maternal aunts, and I asked: When any of you was menstruating, what would she do for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? She said: When any of us was in that state, she would tie a loose lower garment and would cling to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with her hands and chest.
Hadith 949
عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: حِضْتُ وَأَنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي ثَوْبِهِ، قَالَتْ: فَانْسَلَلْتُ، فَقَالَ: ((أَنَفِسْتِ؟)) قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! وَجَدْتُّ مَا تَجِدُ النِّسَاءُ، قَالَ: ((ذَاكِ مَا كُتِبَ عَلَى بَنَاتِ آدَمَ)) قَالَتْ: فَانْطَلَقْتُ فَأَصْلَحْتُ مِنْ شَأْنِي فَاسْتَثْفَرْتُ بِثَوْبٍ ثُمَّ جِئْتُ مَعَهُ فِي لِحَافِهِ
It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: I became menstruating at a time when I and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were under one cloth. So I slipped away, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have you become menstruating?" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah! I have been afflicted with that which women are afflicted with." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is something that has been written upon the daughters of Adam." In any case, I went away, arranged myself, tied a cloth around myself, and then came and lay down with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) under the blanket.
Hadith 950
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: حِضْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَانْسَلَلْتُ، فَقَالَ لِي: ((أَحِضْتِ؟)) فَقُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: ((فَشُدِّي عَلَيْكِ إِزَارَكِ ثُمَّ عُودِي))
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: I was on the bed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when I began menstruating, so I moved away from there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Have you started menstruating? I said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Fasten your lower garment tightly around yourself and then come back.
Hadith 951
عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ بُدَيَّةَ قَالَتْ: أَرْسَلَتْنِي مَيْمُونَةُ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ (زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) إِلَى امْرَأَةِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَكَانَتْ بَيْنَهُمَا قِرَابَةٌ، فَرَأَيْتُ فِرَاشَهَا مُعْتَزِلًا فِرَاشَهُ فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ ذَلِكَ لِهِجْرَانٍ، فَسَأَلْتُهَا فَقَالَتْ: لَا وَلَكِنِّي حَائِضٌ، فَأَتَيْتُ مَيْمُونَةَ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهَا فَرَدَّتْنِي إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فَقَالَتْ: أَرَغْبَةً عَنْ سُنَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ لَقَدْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَنَامُ مَعَ الْمَرْأَةِ مِنْ نِسَائِهِ الْحَائِضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِلَّا ثَوْبٌ مَا يُجَاوِزُ الرُّكْبَتَيْنِ
Budiya says: The wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Maymunah bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her), sent me to the wife of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him); there was a family relation between the two. I saw that her bed was separate and apart from the bed of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). I thought that this must be due to some displeasure, but when I asked her, she said: There is no displeasure; the matter is that I am menstruating, and when my menstruation begins, he does not come near me. So I went to Sayyida Maymunah and informed her of this situation. She sent me back to Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and sent this message to him: Are you turning away from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to sleep with his menstruating wives, and there would be only a cloth between them, which did not even reach the knees.
