It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about a person who finds wetness of semen but does not remember having a wet dream. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He should perform ghusl (ritual bath). Then he was asked about a person who thinks he had a wet dream but does not find any wetness. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no ghusl upon him. Sayyida Umm Sulaym (RA) said: If a woman has a similar dream, is the ruling the same for her? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, women are like men.
Sayyida Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), was her neighbor and she used to visit her. One day, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the house and Sayyida Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah! What is your opinion regarding this: if a woman sees in a dream that her husband is having intercourse with her, should she perform ghusl (ritual bath)? Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) said: May your hands be soiled, O Umm Sulaym! You have disgraced women in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyida Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Indeed, Allah does not shy away from the truth, and if we ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about our doubts, it is better than that we remain ignorant and blind about them. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her): Rather, may your hands be soiled! Yes, Umm Sulaym, when such a woman feels the discharge of semen, then ghusl is obligatory upon her. Sayyida Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah! Does a woman also have discharge? The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then how does her child resemble her? In this matter, women are like men.
Hadith Takhrij«
It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyida Umm Sulaim, the wife of Sayyiduna Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him), said: O Messenger of Allah! If a woman sees in a dream that her husband is having intercourse with her, does she have to perform ghusl (ritual bath)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, when she sees the discharge of semen. Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Does a woman also have discharge? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: May your right hand be dusted! The resemblance of the child to the maternal uncles is due to this discharge of the woman; whichever of the two fluids precedes towards the womb, that one prevails in resemblance. In the narration of Hajjaj, it is: May your forehead be dusted.
(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Salama (RA) that Sayyida Umm Sulaym (RA) asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, Allah does not shy away from the truth, so if a woman experiences a wet dream, is ghusl (ritual bath) obligatory upon her? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Yes, when she sees water (semen).
(Third chain) Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Sayyida Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked about a woman who sees in a dream what men see. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When she sees water, she should perform ghusl (ritual bath). I said: You have disgraced women; does a woman also have a wet dream? The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: May your right hand be dusted! Then how does the child resemble her?
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyida Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the mother of Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), said: O Messenger of Allah! That which a man sees in a dream, if a woman sees the same, then what? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When she sees this and experiences ejaculation, then she should perform ghusl (ritual bath).
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyida Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about a woman who sees in her dream what a man sees. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any woman among you sees such a dream and then experiences discharge, she should perform ghusl (ritual bath). Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah! Does this also happen to women? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, the fluid of a man is white and thick, and the fluid of a woman is yellow and thin. Whichever of them prevails, the child resembles that one.
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that a woman asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): If a woman experiences a wet dream and sees fluid, should she perform ghusl (ritual bath)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Yes. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said to that woman: May your hands be dusted, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: Leave this woman (she is right). It is for this reason that resemblance occurs: when the woman’s fluid prevails over the man’s fluid, the child resembles the maternal uncles, and when the man’s fluid prevails over the woman’s fluid, the child’s resemblance is to him.
It is narrated from Sayyida Khawlah bint Hakim (may Allah be pleased with her) that she asked the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) about a woman who sees in a dream what a man sees. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: There is no ghusl (ritual bath) upon her until fluid is discharged, just as there is no ghusl upon a man until he experiences ejaculation.
(Second chain) Sayyida Khawla bint Hakim Sulamiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was an aunt of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) about a woman who experiences a wet dream. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: She should perform ghusl (ritual bath).
