Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I did not fear hardship for my ummah, I would have commanded them to use the miswak with every prayer, and I would have delayed the Isha prayer until the first third of the night. The reason for this is that when the first third of the night passes, Allah Almighty descends to the lowest heaven and remains there until the break of dawn. During this period, a caller continues to say: 'Is there anyone who asks so that he may be given? Is there anyone who supplicates so that he may be answered? Is there any sick person seeking healing so that he may be healed? And is there any sinner seeking forgiveness so that he may be forgiven?'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If I had not feared hardship for my Ummah, I would have ordered them to use the miswak with every prayer." When Sayyiduna Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, would come to the mosque, the miswak would be on his ear like a scribe's pen, and whenever the prayer was established, he would use the miswak before the prayer.
