It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that "a person should breathe into a vessel, or touch his private part with his right hand, or perform istinja (cleaning after relieving oneself) with his right hand."

So he, peace and blessings be upon him, performed istinja with it, then rubbed his hand on the ground and then washed it. Then I brought another vessel and he, peace and blessings be upon him, performed ablution with it.

Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us, the people of Quba, he said: “Indeed, Allah Almighty has praised you people regarding purity. Will you not tell me (what deed you do)?” By this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) meant the statement of Allah Almighty: «فِيْہَارِجَالٌيُحِبُّوْنَأَنْيَتَطَهَّرُوْا ۚ وَاللّٰہُيُحِبُّالْمُطَّهِّرِيْنَ» They said: “O Messenger of Allah! We find mention in the Torah of cleansing with water (and so we act accordingly).”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Uwain bin Sa‘idah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to those people in the Mosque of Quba and said: “Indeed, Allah Almighty has mentioned your mosque and praised you well regarding purity, so what is this cleanliness that you adopt?” They said: “By Allah! O Messenger of Allah! There is nothing in our knowledge regarding this matter, except that the Jews were our neighbors and they used to wash their backsides after relieving themselves, so we also started washing that part like them.”

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that some women from Basra came to her. Sayyida instructed them to perform istinja (cleaning after relieving oneself) with water themselves and to instruct their husbands to do the same, because the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform istinja in this manner, and this is also a cure for hemorrhoids. Whether this last sentence was said by Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) herself or by Abu Ammar (may Allah have mercy on him) is uncertain.
