Hadith 414
عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ وَهْلَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ: إِنَّا نَغْزُو فَنُؤْتَى بِالْإِهَابِ وَالْأَسْقِيَةِ، قَالَ: مَا أَدْرِي مَا أَقُولُ لَكَ إِلَّا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((أَيُّمَا إِهَابٍ دُبِغَ فَقَدْ طَهُرَ))
Abdur Rahman bin Wahla (may Allah have mercy on him) said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): "Indeed, when we go for jihad, leather and water skins are brought to us." He replied: "I do not understand what I should say to you, but I have heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Any leather that is tanned, indeed, it becomes pure.'"
Hadith 415
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ أَنْ يُنْتَفَعَ بِجُلُودِ الْمَيْتَةِ إِذَا دُبِغَتْ
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Permission has been given to benefit from the skins of dead animals, provided that they are tanned."
Hadith 416
وَعَنْهَا أَيْضًا قَالَتْ: سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ جُلُودِ الْمَيْتَةِ فَقَالَ: ((دِبَاغُهَا طَهُورُهَا))
It is also narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the skins of dead animals. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tanning them is their purification."
Hadith 417
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ سَوْدَةَ بِنْتِ زَمْعَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَتْ: مَاتَتْ شَاةٌ لَنَا فَدَبَغْنَا مَسْكَهَا فَمَا زَلْنَا نَنْبِذُ فِيهِ حَتَّى صَارَ شَنًّا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the wife of the Messenger, Sayyidah Sawdah bint Zam’ah (may Allah be pleased with her), said: “One of our goats died, so we tanned its skin and kept making nabidh in it until it became worn out.”
Hadith 418
عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْمُحَبِّقِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّ بِبَيْتٍ بِفِنَائِهِ قِرْبَةٌ مُعَلَّقَةٌ فَاسْتَسْقَى فَقِيلَ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ فَقَالَ: ((زَكَاةُ الْأَدِيمِ دِبَاغُهُ)) وَفِي لَفْظٍ: ((دِبَاغُهَا طَهُورُهَا أَوْ زَكَاتُهَا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin Muhabbaq (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a house, and there was a water skin hanging in the courtyard of that house. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for water, but it was said that it was made from the skin of a dead animal. Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Purifying the skin is to tan it." In another narration: "To tan it is to purify it."
Hadith 419
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ الْبَاهِلِيِّ عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: دَعَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمَاءٍ فَأَتَيْتُ خِبَاءً فَإِذَا فِيهِ امْرَأَةٌ أَعْرَابِيَّةٌ، قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّ هَذَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يُرِيدُ مَاءً يَتَوَضَّأُ، فَهَلْ عِنْدَكِ مِنْ مَاءٍ؟ قَالَتْ: بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَوَاللَّهِ! مَا تُظِلُّ السَّمَاءُ وَلَا تُقِلُّ الْأَرْضُ رُوحًا أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ رُوحِهِ وَلَا أَعَزَّ، وَلَكِنَّ هَذِهِ الْقِرْبَةَ مَسْكُ مَيْتَةٍ وَلَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أُنَجِّسَ بِهِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ، فَقَالَ: ((ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهَا، فَإِنْ كَانَتْ دَبَغَتْهَا فَهِيَ طَهُورُهَا)) قَالَ: فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَيْهَا فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهَا فَقَالَتْ: أَيْ وَاللَّهِ! لَقَدْ دَبَغْتُهَا، فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِمَاءٍ مِنْهَا وَعَلَيْهِ يَوْمَئِذٍ جُبَّةٌ شَامِيَّةٌ وَعَلَيْهِ خُفَّانٍ وَخِمَارٌ، قَالَ: فَأَدْخَلَ يَدَهُ مِنْ تَحْتِ الْجُبَّةِ، قَالَ: مِنْ ضِيقِ كُمِّهَا، قَالَ: فَتَوَضَّأَ فَمَسَحَ عَلَى الْخِمَارِ وَالْخُفَّيْنِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me for water, so I went into a tent, in which there was a Bedouin woman. I said to her: “This is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he wants water for ablution, so do you have any water?” She said: “May my parents be sacrificed for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! By Allah, neither has the sky shaded a soul more beloved and honored to me than the soul of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nor has the earth carried such a soul. But the thing is, this water skin is made from the hide of a dead animal, and I would not like to make the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) impure through it.” So I returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of this. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Go back to her, if she has tanned it, then that is what purifies it.” So I returned to her and conveyed this instruction. She said: “Yes, by Allah! I have tanned it.” So I brought the water to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). That day, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a Syrian cloak with adornment, two leather socks, and a turban. Because the sleeves were tight, he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought his hands out from under the cloak, then he performed ablution and wiped over the turban and the socks.
Hadith 420
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي جُلُودِ الْمَيْتَةِ قَالَ: ((إِنَّ دِبَاغَهَا قَدْ أَذْهَبَ نَجَسَهَا أَوْ رِجْسَهَا أَوْ خَبَثَهَا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding the skin of a dead animal: "Indeed, its tanning removes its impurity."
Hadith 421
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا أَنَّ دَاجِنَةً لِمَيْمُونَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا مَاتَتْ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((أَلَا انْتَفَعْتُمْ بِإِهَابِهَا، أَلَا دَبَغْتُمُوهُ فَإِنَّهُ زَكَاتُهُ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the pet goat of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) died. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not benefit from its skin? Why did you not tan it? For indeed, that is its purification."
Hadith 422
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ (زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ): أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ لِمَوْلَاةٍ لِمَيْمُونَةَ مَيْتَةٍ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِنَّمَا حَرُمَ أَكْلُهَا)) قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: هَذِهِ الْكَلِمَةُ لَمْ أَسْمَعْهَا إِلَّا مِنَ الزُّهْرِيِّ ((حَرُمَ أَكْلُهَا)) قَالَ أَبِي: قَالَ سُفْيَانُ مَرَّتَيْنِ عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the wife of the Messenger, Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), states that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by her slave-girl near a dead goat. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Only its eating is forbidden." Imam Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I have heard the words "Only its eating is forbidden" only from Imam Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him). My father (Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sufyan narrated the hadith twice through the chain of Maymunah.
Hadith 423
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ مَيْتَةٍ فَقَالَ: ((هَلَّا اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِإِهَابِهَا)) فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ، فَقَالَ: ((إِنَّمَا حَرُمَ أَكْلُهَا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a dead goat. He (peace be upon him) said: "Why did you not benefit from its skin?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, it is dead." He (peace be upon him) said: "Only its eating is forbidden."
Hadith 424
عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَتْ: مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِرِجَالٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ يَجُرُّونَ شَاةً لَهُمْ مِثْلَ الْحِمَارِ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَوْ أَخَذْتُمْ إِهَابَهَا)) قَالُوا: إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((يُطَهِّرُهَا الْمَاءُ وَالْقَرَظُ))
The wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by some men of the Quraysh who were dragging a goat like a donkey. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "If only you had taken off its skin." They said: "It is dead (carrion)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Water and qaraz will purify it."
