بَابٌ فِي التَّحْذِيرِ مِنَ الِابْتِدَاعِ فِي الدِّينِ وَإِثْمِ مَنْ دَعَا إِلَى ضَلَالَةٍ
Chapter on the warning against innovation in religion and the sin of one who calls to misguidance
Hadith 336
عَنْ جَابِرٍ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((أَمَّا بَعْدُ! فَإِنَّ أَصْدَقَ الْحَدِيثِ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ وَإِنَّ أَفْضَلَ الْهَدْيِ هَدْيُ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَشَرَّ الْأُمُورِ مُحْدَثَاتُهَا وَكُلُّ بِدْعَةٍ ضَلَالَةٌ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to us, praised and glorified Allah as is His due, and then said: «أَمَّا بَعْدُ» Verily, the truest word is the Book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst matters are those that are newly invented, and every innovation is misguidance.
Hadith 337
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ سَنَّ سُنَّةَ ضَلَالٍ فَاتُّبِعَ عَلَيْهَا كَانَ عَلَيْهِ مِثْلُ أَوْزَارِهِمْ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْقُصَ مِنْ أَوْزَارِهِمْ شَيْءٌ، وَمَنْ سَنَّ سُنَّةَ هُدًى فَاتُّبِعَ عَلَيْهَا كَانَ لَهُ مِثْلُ أُجُورِهِمْ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْقُصَ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْءٌ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever establishes a path of misguidance and then it is followed, he will bear a sin equal to the sins of those who follow him, without their sins being diminished in any way. Likewise, whoever establishes a path of guidance and then it is followed, he will have a reward equal to the rewards of those who follow him, without their rewards being diminished in any way.”
Hadith 338
عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ الرَّحَبِيِّ عَنْ غُضَيْفِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الشُّمَالِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: بَعَثَ إِلَيَّ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ مَرْوَانَ فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا أَسْمَاءَ! إِنَّا قَدْ أَجْمَعْنَا النَّاسَ عَلَى أَمْرَيْنِ، قَالَ: وَمَا هُمَا؟ قَالَ: رَفْعُ الْأَيْدِي عَلَى الْمَنَابِرِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَالْقَصَصُ بَعْدَ الصُّبْحِ وَالْعَصْرِ، فَقَالَ: أَمَا إِنَّهُمَا أَمْثَلُ بِدْعَتَيْكُمْ عِنْدِي وَلَسْتُ مُجِيبَكَ إِلَى شَيْءٍ مِنْهُمَا، قَالَ: لِمَ؟ قَالَ: لِأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَا أَحْدَثَ قَوْمٌ بِدْعَةً إِلَّا رُفِعَ مِثْلُهَا مِنَ السُّنَّةِ، فَتَمَسُّكٌ بِسُنَّةٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ إِحْدَاثِ بِدْعَةٍ))
Ghudaif bin Harith Shumali, may Allah have mercy on him, says: Abdul Malik bin Marwan summoned me. When I went, he said: "O Abu Asma! We have united the people upon two things." I asked: "What are those?" He said: "Raising hands on the pulpits on the day of Jumu'ah and storytelling after the Fajr and Asr prayers." I said: "In my view, these are the two best examples of your innovations, and I will not do any of them." He asked: "Why?" I replied: "Because the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Whenever a people invent a bid'ah (innovation), a sunnah of equal measure will be taken away from them. Thus, holding fast to the sunnah is better than inventing a bid'ah.'"
Hadith 339
عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَوْصَى فِي مَسَاكِنَ لَهُ بِثُلُثِ كُلِّ مَسْكَنٍ لِإِنْسَانٍ، فَسَأَلْتُ الْقَاسِمَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ فَقَالَ: اجْمَعْ ثَلَاثَةً فِي مَكَانٍ وَاحِدٍ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ عَائِشَةَ (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا) تَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ عَمِلَ عَمَلًا لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرُنَا فَأَمْرُهُ رَدٌّ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: فَهُوَ رَدٌّ)))
Sa’d bin Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) says: A man made a will regarding his three houses that a third of each house should be given to a certain person. I asked Qasim bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) about this, and he said: “Allocate one house for the three individuals (and the remaining two houses for the heirs).” Indeed, I heard from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever does an act upon which there is no command from us, then that act is rejected.”
