بَابٌ فِي وَعِيدِ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ عِلْمًا فَكَتَمَهُ أَوْ لَمْ يَعْمَلْ بِهِ أَوْ تَعَلَّمَ لِغَيْرِ اللَّهِ
Chapter on the warning for one who learns knowledge and conceals it, or does not act upon it, or learns for other than Allah
Hadith 273
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ سُئِلَ عَنْ عِلْمٍ فَكَتَمَهُ أُلْجِمَ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: أُلْجَمَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) بِلِجَامٍ مِنْ نَارٍ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If a person is asked about knowledge and he conceals it, then on the Day of Resurrection, Allah Almighty will bridle him with fire."
Hadith 274
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِنَّ مَثَلَ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ كَمَثَلِ كَنْزٍ لَا يُنْفَقُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, the example of knowledge from which no benefit is derived is like that of a treasure which is not spent in the way of Allah, the Exalted."
Hadith 275
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَمَّا أُسْرِيَ بِي مَرَرْتُ بِرِجَالٍ تُقْرَضُ شِفَاهُهُمْ بِمَقَارِيضَ مِنْ نَارٍ، فَقُلْتُ: مَنْ هَؤُلَاءِ يَا جِبْرِيلُ؟ قَالَ: هَؤُلَاءِ خُطَبَاءُ مِنْ أُمَّتِكَ يَأْمُرُونَ النَّاسَ بِالْبِرِّ وَيَنْسَوْنَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَتْلُونَ الْكِتَابَ، أَفَلَا يَعْقِلُونَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When I was taken on the Night Journey (Isra), I passed by some people whose lips were being cut with scissors of fire." I said: "O Jibril! Who are these people?" He said: "These are the preachers of your Ummah who command others to do good but forget their own selves, while they recite the Book. Do they not then understand?"
Hadith 276
عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((إِنَّكُمْ فِي زَمَانٍ عُلَمَاؤُهُ كَثِيرٌ، خُطَبَاؤُهُ قَلِيلٌ، مَنْ تَرَكَ فِيهِ عُشَيْرَ مَا يَعْلَمُ هَوَى، أَوْ قَالَ: هَلَكَ، وَسَيَأْتِي عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ يَقِلُّ عُلَمَاؤُهُ وَيَكْثُرُ خُطَبَاؤُهُ، مَنْ تَمَسَّكَ فِيهِ بِعَشِيْرِ مَا يَعْلَمُ نَجَا))
Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are now in a time in which scholars are many and preachers are few. In such a time, whoever does not act even upon a tenth of his knowledge will be destroyed. But soon there will come a time upon the people in which scholars will be few and preachers will be many. In that time, whoever acts even upon a tenth of his knowledge will attain salvation."
Hadith 277
عَنْ شَقِيقٍ عَنْ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قِيلَ لَهُ: أَلَا تَدْخُلُ عَلَى هَذَا الرَّجُلِ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: أَلَا تُكَلِّمُ عُثْمَانَ) قَالَ: فَقَالَ: أَلَا تَرَوْنَ أَنِّي لَا أُكَلِّمُهُ إِلَّا أُسْمِعُكُمْ، وَاللَّهِ! لَقَدْ كَلَّمْتُهُ فِيمَا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ مَادُونَ أَنْ أَفْتَحَ أَمْرًا لَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنَا أَوَّلُ مَنْ فَتَحَهُ وَلَا أَقُولُ لِرَجُلٍ أَنْ يَكُونَ عَلَيَّ أَمِيرًا إِنَّهُ خَيْرُ النَّاسِ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: وَلَا أَقُولُ لِرَجُلٍ إِنَّكَ خَيْرُ النَّاسِ وَإِنْ كَانَ عَلَيَّ أَمِيرًا) بَعْدَ مَا سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((يُؤْتَى بِالرَّجُلِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَيُلْقَى فِي النَّارِ، فَتَنْدَلِقُ أَقْتَابُ بَطْنِهِ فَيَدُورُ بِهَا فِي النَّارِ كَمَا يَدُورُ الْحِمَارُ بِالرَّحَى، قَالَ: فَيَجْتَمِعُ أَهْلُ النَّارِ إِلَيْهِ، فَيَقُولُونَ: يَا فُلَانُ! أَمَا كُنْتَ تَأْمُرُنَا بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَانَا عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ؟ قَالَ: فَيَقُولُ: بَلَى! قَدْ كُنْتُ آمُرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ فَلَا آتِيهِ وَأَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَآتِيهِ))
Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) says that someone said to Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him): "Will you not go and speak to this man, meaning Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He replied: "Do you think that whenever I speak to him, I will make you hear it? By Allah! Without announcing anything, I have spoken to him, and in that gathering, only he and I were present. I do not like to be the first to announce such matters." After hearing this hadith, I will not say about any person that he is the best among the people, even if he is my leader. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and he will be thrown into the Fire. His intestines will come out and he will begin to circle around them in Hell as a donkey circles around a millstone. Seeing his condition, the people of Hell will gather around him and say: 'Did you not used to command us to do good and forbid us from evil?' He will say: 'Yes, I used to command you to do good but I did not do it myself, and I used to forbid you from evil but I used to commit it myself.'"
Hadith 278
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ عِلْمًا مِمَّا يُبْتَغَى بِهِ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ لَا يَتَعَلَّمُهُ إِلَّا لِيُصِيبَ بِهِ عَرَضًا مِنَ الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَجِدْ عَرْفَ الْجَنَّةِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ)) يَعْنِي رِيحَهَا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The knowledge through which the Face of Allah Almighty is sought—whoever learns it to acquire worldly goods, he will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection."
