It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out one day and the people were discussing the topic of destiny (qadar). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became so angry that it seemed as if a pomegranate seed had burst on his face (i.e., his face turned red with anger). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is wrong with you? You are striking one part of Allah’s Book against another. It was for this very reason that the people before you were destroyed." Sayyiduna Abdullah said: Never did I feel so much envy for missing a gathering in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was present as I did for this gathering, wishing that I had not been present (so that I would not have become the subject of the Prophet’s anger).

Muhammad bin Ubaid Makki, may Allah have mercy on him, says that someone said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both: "A man has come to us who denies destiny (Qadar)." He said: "Take me to him." At that time, he had become blind. The people said: "O Ibn Abbas! What will you do to him?" He said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul! If I gain control over him, I will bite his nose until I cut it off, and if his neck comes into my hands, I will break it. The reason is that I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'It is as if I am seeing the women of Banu Fihr circumambulating Khazraj, their hips moving, and they are idolaters. This will be the first shirk (polytheism) of this Ummah. By the One in Whose hand is my soul! This vile opinion of theirs will lead them to the point that they will remove Allah, the Exalted, even from decreeing good, just as they have removed Him from decreeing evil.'"
