بَابٌ فِي كَوْنِ الْإِسْلَامِ يَجُبُّ مَا قَبْلَهُ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ وَكَذَا الْهِجْرَةُ وَ هَلْ يُؤَاخَذُ بِأَعْمَالِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَ بَيَانُ حُكْمِ عَمَلِ الْكَافِرِ إِذَا أَسْلَمَ بَعْدَهُ
Chapter on the ruling that Islam erases what came before it of sins, likewise migration, and whether one is held accountable for the deeds of ignorance, and the ruling on the deeds of a disbeliever if he accepts Islam afterward
Hadith 117
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: لَمَّا أَلْقَى اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي قَلْبِيَ الْإِسْلَامَ قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيُبَايِعَنِي فَبَسَطَ يَدَهُ إِلَيَّ فَقُلْتُ: لَا أُبَايِعُكَ حَتَّى يُغْفَرَ لِي مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِي، قَالَ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((يَا عَمْرُو! أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ الْهِجْرَةَ تَجُبُّ مَا قَبْلَهَا مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ، يَا عَمْرُو! أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ الْإِسْلَامَ يَجُبُّ مَا قَبْلَهُ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: When Allah Almighty put the thought of Islam into my heart, I came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to pledge allegiance, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) extended his hand towards me, but at that moment I said: "I will not pledge allegiance to you until my previous sins are forgiven." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Amr! Do you not know that migration wipes out previous sins? Amr! Do you not know that Islam also erases previous sins?"
Hadith 118
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِذَا أَحْسَنْتُ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ أُؤَاخَذُ بِمَا عَمِلْتُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ؟ قَالَ: ((إِذَا أَحْسَنْتَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ لَمْ تُؤَاخَذْ بِمَا عَمِلْتَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَإِذَا أَسَأْتَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ أُخِذْتَ بِالْأَوَّلِ وَالْآخِرِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! If I (accept Islam and) continue to do good deeds in this religion, will I be held accountable for my evils committed during the time of ignorance?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you accept Islam outwardly and inwardly, you will not be held accountable for whatever you did during the time of ignorance. But if you accept Islam outwardly and not inwardly, then you will be held accountable for every sin, past and future."
Hadith 119
عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْجُعْفِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: انْطَلَقْتُ أَنَا وَأَخِي إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: قُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّ أُمَّنَا مُلَيْكَةَ كَانَتْ تَصِلُ الرَّحِمَ وَتَقْرِي الضَّيْفَ وَتَفْعَلُ وَتَفْعَلُ هَلَكَتْ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَهَلْ ذَلِكَ نَافِعُهَا شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ: ((لَا)) قَالَ: قُلْنَا: فَإِنَّهَا كَانَتْ وَأَدَتْ أُخْتًا لَنَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَهَلْ ذَلِكَ نَافِعُهَا شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ: ((الْوَائِدَةُ وَالْمَوْؤُودَةُ فِي النَّارِ إِلَّا أَنْ تُدْرِكَ الْوَائِدَةُ الْإِسْلَامَ فَيَعْفُوَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا))
Sayyiduna Salamah bin Yazid Jufi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: My brother and I both went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Our mother Malikah used to maintain ties of kinship, host guests, and perform many such good deeds, but she passed away during the time of ignorance. Will these deeds benefit her?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” We said: “She had buried one of our sisters alive during the time of ignorance, will this thing benefit her?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The one who buried alive and the one who was buried alive, both are in Hell, except if the one who buried alive attains Islam, and thus Allah Almighty forgives her.”
Hadith 120
عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ الطَّائِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّ أَبِي كَانَ يَصِلُ الرَّحِمَ وَيَفْعَلُ وَيَفْعَلُ، فَهَلْ لَهُ فِي ذَلِكَ يَعْنِي مِنْ أَجْرِهِ؟ قَالَ: ((إِنَّ أَبَاكَ طَلَبَ أَمْرًا فَأَصَابَهُ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: “O Messenger of Allah! My father used to maintain ties of kinship and also performed many other good deeds. Will he receive their reward?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, that which your father sought (in the form of fame and praise), he has already received.”
Hadith 121
عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! أَرَأَيْتَ أُمُورًا كُنْتُ أَتَحَنَّثُ بِهَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ مِنْ عَتَاقَةٍ وَصِلَةِ رَحِمٍ هَلْ لِي فِيهَا أَجْرٌ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((أَسْلَمْتَ عَلَى مَا أَسْلَفْتَ مِنْ خَيْرٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I said, "O Messenger of Allah! What is your opinion about acts such as freeing slaves and maintaining ties of kinship, which I used to do as acts of worship during the time of ignorance? Will I receive a reward for them?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have accepted Islam along with all the good deeds you have already done."
Hadith 122
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَبَسَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَيْخٌ كَبِيرٌ يَدَّعِمُ عَلَى عَصًا لَهُ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّ لِي غَدَرَاتٍ وَفَجَرَاتٍ فَهَلْ يُغْفَرُ لِي؟ قَالَ: ((أَلَسْتَ تَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ؟)) قَالَ: بَلَى! وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: ((قَدْ غُفِرَ لَكَ غَدَرَاتُكَ وَفَجَرَاتُكَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) that an old man came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) leaning on a stick and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, I have committed deceits, betrayals, and evils; will I still be forgiven?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not bear witness that Allah alone is the true deity?" He said: "Why not, in fact, I also bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your deceits, betrayals, and evils have been forgiven."
