It is narrated from Sayyiduna Aws bin Huzayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was present in that delegation which came from the Banu Malik tribe of Thaqif to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and accepted Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) accommodated us in a tent. When he would go from his house to the mosque, he would pass by us. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the Isha prayer, he would come to us and talk with us for a long time, mentioning the complaints of the Quraysh and the people of Makkah, and would say: Now there is no equality, the time has changed. In Makkah, we were scattered and weak, and when we were expelled from Makkah towards Madinah Munawwarah, the drum of war was beaten against us and also in our favor (meaning the contest was equal). One night, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come to us; a long time passed after Isha. Then when he came, we said: O Messenger of Allah! What was the reason you did not come to us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: My portion of the Qur’an (was left), so it overcame me and I resolved not to come out until I completed it. When morning came, we asked the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): How do you divide the Qur’an and make portions of it? They said: We divide the Qur’an in this way: three surahs, five surahs, seven surahs, nine surahs, eleven surahs, thirteen surahs, and from Surah Qaf to the end is the detailed portion. In this way, the completion of the Qur’an is achieved.
