Abu Tiyah says: I asked Abdur Rahman bin Khunbash Tamimi: What did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do on that night when the devils came near him? He said: That night, the devils attacked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from various valleys and mountains. Among them was a devil who had a flame of fire in his hand and wanted to burn the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). But he was overawed; the narrator Ja'far said that he retreated. Meanwhile, Jibreel (peace be upon him) arrived and said: O Muhammad! Say. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What should I say? He said: Recite this supplication: "A‘udhu bikalimatillahi-t-tammati... wa min sharri fitanil-layli wan-nahar, wa min sharri kulli tariqin illa tariqan yatraqu bikhayrin, ya Rahman." (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which neither the good nor the evil can surpass, from the evil of everything He has created, and from the evil of that which descends from the sky, and from the evil of that which ascends into the sky, and from the evil of that which comes at night, except one who comes with good, O Most Merciful!) (As a result,) the fire of the devils was extinguished and Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, defeated them.
