عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ أَشْعَرُ بَيْتٍ قَالَتْهُ الْعَرَبُ أَلَا كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مَا خَلَا اللَّهَ بَاطِلُ وَكَادَ أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ أَبِي الصَّلْتِ أَنْ يُسْلِمَ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said from the pulpit: The greatest verse of poetry ever spoken by the Arabs is: "Ala kullu shay'in ma khala Allah batil" (Be aware! Everything besides Allah Almighty is false). Umayyah bin Abi Salt was close to becoming a Muslim.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … By "batil" (falsehood) is meant that which is perishable. This verse is in accordance with the statement of Allah Ta'ala: {کُلُّ مَنْ عَلَیْھَا فَانٍ وَّیَبْقٰی وَجْہُ رَبِّکَ ذُوالْجَلٰلِ وَالْاِکْرَامِ۔} … "Everyone upon it (the earth) will perish. And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor." (Surah Ar-Rahman: 26, 27)
