It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ma’n bin Yazid or Sayyiduna Abu Ma’n, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Gather in the mosques, and when the people have gathered, inform me. So we were the first to gather, then we informed the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Then he, peace and blessings be upon him, came walking with us until he sat with us. Then one of us, who was appointed, spoke and said: All praise is for Allah, for whom no one’s praise was ever sufficient before, and whose praise cannot be surpassed, or he said something similar. But it happened that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, became angry and left. We blamed each other among ourselves and said: Allah had favored us in that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to us first, and now this has happened. Then we went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and found him in the mosque of such-and-such tribe. We spoke to him, and he, peace and blessings be upon him, walked with us until he sat in the same place or near it and said: Indeed, all praise is for Allah; now it is Allah’s will whether He establishes this praise before the present time or after it, and indeed, some speech is magic. Then he, peace and blessings be upon him, turned to us and gave us commands, spoke to us, and taught us some matters.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … before whom no one’s praise is sufficient, and beyond whose praise it is not possible to go. The meaning of this phrase is that if anyone is praised before Allah Ta’ala, that praise will not be sufficient, rather the subject will progress further and ultimately reach Allah Ta’ala, because He is the true deserving one of praise. And when Allah Ta’ala is praised, then it cannot be surpassed.
The reason for the anger of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was that the speaker exaggerated in his speech and closed off the praise in such a way that there remained no way for it to proceed further. Therefore, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself described the praise of Allah Ta’ala and demonstrated its proper manner.
