Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi’ah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us at our house, and I was a child at that time. When I was about to go out to play, my mother said: O Abdullah! Come here, I want to give you something. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What do you intend to give him? She said: I will give him a date. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you were not going to give him anything, it would have been written as a lie against you.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … A mother’s lap is the child’s first school and place of upbringing; it is in this institution that natures are either refined or corrupted. Although every child is born upon the innate disposition (fitrah) of Islam, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam took such strict measures for the preservation of this fitrah that even speaking a lie to a child who is unaware of the reality of lying was declared a crime. In order to keep this fitrah intact, the child is commanded to perform prayer (salah) at the age of seven. Reflect that, in our context, prayer is not obligatory upon a child of ten years, because he is not yet legally responsible (not baligh), but these are the requirements of the protective measures for his fitrah, that the Kind Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered that after the age of ten, a child should be disciplined (even with light beating) for neglecting prayer. We should, in the light of these Prophetic golden principles, nurture the hearts and minds of our children.
