Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Avoid lying, for indeed lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to Hell. A man continues to lie and seeks out lying until he is written with Allah as a liar (great liar).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Lying is a hypocritical practice; its outcome results in people developing hatred for the liar. Just as qualities like truthfulness and sincerity become a cause for Paradise, so too do vile habits such as lying and falsehood present the concerned servant before Allah Ta’ala as a liar (kadhdhab).
Lying is a distinguished sin in the sense that it incites the liar towards many other acts of disobedience and transgression. A liar, by breaking promises, will satisfy the concerned person by narrating false stories of his own compulsions, and such a person feels neither remorse nor concern when committing sins related to the rights of others, because he possesses the ability to present himself as innocent.
The severity of the sin of lying can be gauged from the punishment that results from it, as Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam related to us a lengthy dream, in which he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was shown various scenes of mercy and blessing, as well as punishment and retribution. An excerpt from this dream is as follows: ((And as for the man whom you passed by, whose jaw, nostril, and eye were being torn to the back of his head, he is the man who leaves his house in the morning and tells a lie that reaches the horizons.)) (Sahih Bukhari) May Allah Ta’ala protect us.
