Narrated from Sayyiduna Bilal bin Harith Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, a person utters a word that is pleasing to Allah, while he himself does not even imagine that it will reach such a high rank, Allah writes His pleasure for that person because of it until the Day of Resurrection. And indeed, a person utters a word that is displeasing to Allah, while he himself does not even realize how far that word will reach, Allah writes His displeasure for that person because of it until the Day of Resurrection. Alqamah said: How many words are there from which this hadith of Sayyiduna Bilal bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) has prevented me.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This is an observed reality that sometimes a person utters a word of goodness with his tongue, by which someone’s heart is gladdened, or someone is given reassurance, or someone is reformed, or someone refrains from the intention of oppression and disobedience. Certainly, for the one who utters such a word, it becomes a means of reward and recompense. But at times it also happens that a servant utters a word of evil, by which someone’s heart is hurt, or someone, because of it, becomes determined upon oppression and disobedience, or it fuels such a dispute that a prolonged quarrel and bloodshed begins, or he becomes a caller to someone’s misguidance and deviation. It is evident that for the one who utters such a thing, it will be a cause of ruin and punishment, and it will cast him into the pit of destruction. We should therefore be cautious regarding our tongues.
