If you observe any gathering, you will note that the majority of the conversation consists of idle and frivolous talk, indecent and obscene speech, tale-bearing and backbiting, and discussions on purposeless topics. There will be debates on politics and leadership, commentary on the conditions and future of various countries of the world, from which neither the past gains any support nor does the future hold any hope. Everyone, by narrating their own problems and hardships, seems intent on being ungrateful to Allah Ta‘ala. There will be excessive and unnecessary use of the tongue; the attendees of the gathering, by mentioning their opponents, will harshly criticize them. Therefore, it is better that instead of spending your free time in such mingling, you devote it at home to the obedience of Allah Ta‘ala, remembrance and contemplation, recitation (of the Qur’an), and resolving the issues of your wife and children, fulfilling the requirements of serving them. In this way, weeping over one’s own mistakes and slips in solitude is also greatly beloved to Allah Ta‘ala, and such an opportunity is only found in seclusion.
