Syedna Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said from the pulpit: What is the matter with those people who say that the kinship of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will not benefit his people in any way? Why not, by Allah, my kinship will be joined in this world and the Hereafter. O people! I will precede you at the Hawd (the Pond), so when you come there, at that moment a man will say: O Messenger of Allah! I am so-and-so, and his brother will say: I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so. You (peace and blessings be upon him) will say: I have recognized the lineage, but after me you invented new matters and turned back on your heels.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Every relationship (and connection and kinship) will be severed on the Day of Resurrection, except for my marital and blood relationships.” This hadith is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas, Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab, Sayyiduna Miswar ibn Makhramah, and Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar. (Al-Mu’jam al-Kabir by al-Tabarani: 3/129/1 from the hadith of Ibn Abbas. For details, see: Sahihah: 2036)
Explanation: … The wording of the hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu is: “Every blood and marital relationship will be severed on the Day of Resurrection except for my blood and marital relationship.” (Ibn Asakir: 19/60/2, and this chain is very weak) … Every blood and marital relationship will be severed, except for my blood and marital relationship.
The following details further clarify this hadith:
Uqbah ibn Amir says that Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu repeatedly sent a marriage proposal to Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu for his daughter, who was from the womb of Sayyidah Fatimah radi Allahu anha. One day, he himself said: “O Abu al-Hasan! The reason for my frequent proposals to you is that hadith which I heard from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ‘Every relationship and kinship will be severed on the Day of Resurrection, except for my marital and blood relationship.’ … On the Day of Resurrection, every relationship (and connection and kinship) will be severed, except for my marital and blood relationship.
I wish that I should have marital kinship with the Ahl al-Bayt (the Prophet’s family).” Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu went and ordered his daughter to adorn herself, and then sent her to the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu. When he saw her, he stood up towards her and held her shin and said: “Tell your father that I am pleased, I am pleased, I am pleased.” When the girl reached her father, Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, he asked: “What did the Commander of the Faithful say to you?” She said: “He called me and accepted (the proposal). When I stood up, he held my shin and said: ‘Tell your father that I am pleased.’” Then he married her to him, and from her womb Zayd ibn Umar was born, who lived until youth and then passed away. (Narrated by Abu Bakr al-Shafi’i in al-Fawa’id: 73/257/1, Ibn ‘Adi: 6/2, and al-Khatib in al-Tarikh: 6/182)
In the heart of Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu was this honor for the family of the Messenger, and in response, Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu fulfilled his wish, showing the utmost respect. Allah Ta’ala has chosen the title of {رُحَمَآئُ بَیْنَھُمْ} for these personalities in the best way.
From this discussion, it is understood that the honor of the lineage of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam will remain even on the Day of Resurrection; no other nation or tribe will have any distinction. Nevertheless, salvation will depend on righteous deeds.
This distinction can be easily understood through an example: The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself, in his own time, would declare some tribes superior to others and, on this basis, would differentiate in dealings with them. This was, in fact, an honor for some tribes. However, in matters of crime and virtue, this rule was not observed for any tribe, to the extent that the hand of a woman from Banu Makhzum was cut off due to theft.
