Hadith 9793

It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Laili, he says: The companions of the Prophet told us that they were walking with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when a man fell asleep. Some companions went to him and took his arrows. When he woke up, he became alarmed, and the people laughed. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked: Why are you laughing? They said: Nothing, we just took his arrows and he became alarmed. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: It is not lawful for a Muslim to frighten another Muslim.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “None of you should ever take his brother’s belongings, neither in jest nor in seriousness. Whoever has taken his brother’s staff should return it.” (Abu Dawud: 5003, Tirmidhi: 2160)

A Muslim’s life, wealth, and honor are extremely respected and protected matters; even in jest, to insult someone or to usurp their property is forbidden (haram).

Nowadays, people deliberately steal someone’s belongings first, and then, upon its return, impose a penalty of providing food or drink in the name of celebrating its recovery. Such actions are in no way permissible.
