Hadith 9777

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The disease of previous nations has also crept into you, that is, envy and malice. This disease shaves off the religion, not the head. By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! You will not be believers until you love one another. Shall I not tell you something which, if you act upon it, you will begin to love one another? Spread salam (greetings of peace) among yourselves.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … For a person to burn with envy at another’s prosperity and to wish that his blessing and prosperity be taken away from him and given to oneself is called hasad (envy). The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam strictly forbade hasad. In fact, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Beware of envy, for indeed envy consumes good deeds just as fire consumes wood.”

(Abu Dawud, and in its chain is an unknown narrator, but it has a supporting narration from Anas with Ibn Majah, and in its chain is ‘Isa ibn Abi ‘Isa, who is weak.)

Hasad is a vile trait from which arise other evil qualities such as malice, rancor, resentment, mutual enmity, and severing of ties. The one who is envious himself becomes afflicted with mental anguish and inner unrest. As a result, evil and corruption arise in the Muslim society, and people are deprived of goodness and virtue.

In reality, hasad is a form of being displeased with the distribution (of blessings) by Allah Ta‘ala, because the qualities and abilities for which we envy someone are those which Allah Ta‘ala has granted him. Therefore, we should be content with Allah Ta‘ala’s distribution and should not harbor any ill wish that someone be deprived of his qualities.
