It is narrated from Sayyida Hamnah bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: I used to experience excessive and severe istihada (non-menstrual bleeding), so I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to seek a fatwa and to inform him of my issue, and I found him at the house of your sister, Sayyida Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her). I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have something to ask you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is it? I said: O Messenger of Allah! I experience excessive and severe istihada (bleeding), what do you think about it? It has prevented me from prayer and fasting. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I advise you to use cotton, it will stop the blood. I said: The blood is more than that. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then tie a cloth tightly. She said: I am bleeding a lot. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I give you two commands, whichever of them you do will suffice for you, so if you are able to do both, you know best. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is one of the kicks of Satan, so count yourself as menstruating for six or seven days, according to what Allah knows, then perform ghusl (ritual bath) in such a way that you see yourself to be truly pure and clean and you are certain of it, then pray and fast for twenty-three or twenty-four days, this will suffice for you. So do this every month, just as women menstruate and become pure in their times of menstruation and purity. And if you are able to delay Zuhr and hasten Asr, and perform ghusl for them and combine both prayers, and delay Maghrib and hasten Isha, and perform ghusl for them and combine both prayers, and perform a separate ghusl for Fajr and offer it, then do so, and pray and fast. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Of these two commands, this action is more beloved to me.
