Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The owners of camels and goats began to boast to one another in the presence of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Among the owners of camels there is pride and arrogance, and among the owners of goats there is tranquility and dignity. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Musa (peace be upon him) was sent as a prophet while he was a shepherd of goats, and when I was granted prophethood, I too was a shepherd of goats at the place of Ji’ad.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The hadith mentions the simplicity and lack of ostentation of the noble Prophets. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes: The scholars of the religion are of the opinion that the reason the noble Prophets herded sheep was so that humility and modesty would develop within them, their hearts would become accustomed to solitude, and by managing and organizing sheep, it would become easier for them to take charge of the affairs of people. Meanwhile, Imam Kirmani, quoting Imam Khattabi, says: Imam Bukhari wants to clarify that Allah Ta’ala did not choose the worshippers of the world and those immersed in luxury and pleasure for prophethood and messengership, but rather bestowed this blessing upon those who were humble, such as shepherds and people of various professions.
