Hadith 9734

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), two men stated their lineage; one said: "I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, so who are you? May your mother not remain!" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the time of Musa (peace be upon him), two men stated their lineage in the same way." Then he mentioned it similar to the hadith of Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The full text of this blessed hadith is as follows:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy ibn Ka‘b radi Allahu anhu, who says: “Two men traced their lineage during the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. One of them said: ‘I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so. Who are you? May you have no mother!’ The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ‘Two men traced their lineage during the time of Musa alayhis salam. One of them said: “I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so,” until he counted nine generations. “Who are you? May you have no mother!” The other replied: “I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, son of Islam.” Allah, the Exalted, revealed to Musa alayhis salam: Say to these two who are tracing their lineage: As for you, O you who trace your lineage through nine ancestors, your nine ancestors are in the Fire, and you are the tenth among them. And as for you, O you who trace your lineage through two ancestors, your two ancestors are in Paradise, and you are the third among them in Paradise.’” … In the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, two men stated their respective lineages. One said: “I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so. May your mother perish, who are you?” The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Two men, in the time of Musa alayhis salam, stated their respective lineages. One said: ‘I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so…’ (he mentioned nine generations), ‘May your mother perish, who are you?’ The other replied: ‘I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, son of Islam.’ Allah, the Exalted, revealed to Musa alayhis salam to say to these two men who were tracing their lineage: ‘You, who traced your lineage through nine ancestors, your nine ancestors are in Hellfire and you are the tenth among them. And you, who traced your lineage through two ancestors, your two ancestors are in Paradise and you are the third among them who will enter Paradise.’” (Musnad Ahmad: 5/128)

If needed, the name of the father or grandfather may be mentioned for the purpose of introduction. In Islam, superiority is not established by lineage.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Whoever is slowed down by his deeds, his lineage will not speed him up.” (Sahih Muslim: 4867) … Whoever is held back by his deeds, his lineage will not carry him forward.
