Hadith 9729

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Do not take pride in your forefathers who died in the age of ignorance. By the One in Whose hand is my soul! The dung beetle (black insect) that rolls things with its nose is better than those ancestors of yours who died in the age of ignorance.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Taking pride in, boasting about, asserting superiority due to, considering oneself noble and distinguished on the basis of one’s people, lineage, and ancestors, establishing one’s excellence, and regarding these as a means of distinction and honor—none of these have any significance in Islam. If lineage is traced back, then all peoples, tribes, and families are united at Adam alayhis salam. For the purpose of identification, the name of one’s lineage may be mentioned. Some people acquire good temperaments from their communities, and because of these, they are granted a life of honor, dignity, and purpose. One should remain steadfast upon such temperament and express gratitude to Allah ta‘ala. In this regard, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has also praised certain tribes and individuals.

For a Muslim, the thing worthy of pride is taqwa (God-consciousness), piety, and righteous deeds, as is established from the verse mentioned at the end of the previous chapter.

The most exalted lineage is that of the family of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Banu Hashim, but even this has no bearing on salvation in the Hereafter; see the chapter with hadith number (9855).

Dung beetle: It is a black insect, which generally makes a small ball-like object from dung, places its front legs on it, and keeps rolling it along.
