It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the time of death of Allah’s Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) approached, he said to his son: Indeed, I am about to give you a will. I command you regarding two things and forbid you from two things. I command you to say LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAH, then he described the virtue of this phrase, and I advise you to say SUBHANALLAHI WABIHAMDIHI, then he mentioned its virtue, and I forbid you from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and arrogance.
Someone said: O Messenger of Allah! We recognize shirk, but what is arrogance? Is it that a servant has good shoes and good laces for them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. He said: Is it that a servant has a garment which he wears? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. He said: Then is arrogance that a servant has a riding animal upon which he rides? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. He said: Is it then that a servant has companions who sit with him? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Then what is arrogance? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: To reject the truth and to look down upon people.
