Sulaiman bin Yasar says: When the people dispersed from around Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), a man from the people of Syria named Natil said: Respected one! Narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: On the Day of Resurrection, the first (three types of) people whose case will be decided are: (1) The man who was martyred, he will be brought, Allah Almighty will make him recognize His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. Then Allah Almighty will ask: What deed did you bring? He will say: I fought in Your way until I was martyred. Allah Almighty will say: You are lying, you fought so that you would be called brave, and so it has already been said (in the world). Then it will be ordered regarding him, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. (2) The man who learned and taught knowledge and recited the Qur’an, he will be brought, Allah Almighty will make him recognize His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. Allah Almighty will say: What deed did you bring? He will say: I learned and taught knowledge for Your sake and recited the Qur’an for You. Allah Almighty will say: You are lying, your purpose in acquiring knowledge was so that you would be called a scholar, and you recited the Qur’an so that you would be called a reciter, and so it has already been said. Then it will be ordered regarding him, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. (3) The man whom Allah Almighty made prosperous and wealthy and granted all kinds of wealth, he will be brought. Allah Almighty will make him recognize His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. Then Allah Almighty will say: What deed did you bring? He will say: I spent in all those ways that You liked to be spent in, I spent for Your sake in all those ways. Allah Almighty will say: You are lying, your purpose in spending was so that you would be called generous, and that has already been said. Then it will be ordered regarding him, according to which he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is understood from this that those who show off (riyakars) will face a severe reckoning. The requirement of Islamic Shariah is that no deed is accepted without sincerity (ikhlas), no matter how great that deed may appear outwardly. However, due to showing off (riya), instead of receiving reward for such a deed, there will be punishment, and such a doer of good will go to Hell instead of Paradise.

It is understood that before performing any good deed or abstaining from any evil, one should determine the purpose of that action: if the intention is to please anyone other than Allah Ta’ala, then such an act should not be done in front of people at all. Furthermore, one should frequently supplicate to Allah Ta’ala for sincerity of intention.
