Hadith 9710

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever desires to become famous, Allah Almighty will make him famous, and whoever desires to display (false) righteousness, Allah Almighty will make it apparent.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … To be desirous of things such as seeking, ostentation, display, and showing off is extreme baseness and lowliness. Allah Ta’ala makes such people famous in the world according to their desire; then their words are listened to, and not only are they honored, but even their flattery and praise are done. However, on the Day of Resurrection, they will be humiliated. The meaning of fame here can also refer to the disgrace of the Day of Judgment, that is, on the Day of Resurrection, they will be humiliated before the people; in this way, their fame will be established and their matter will become clear to everyone.

A believer should strive to develop sincerity in his actions and should be deeply concerned about this matter. Imam Sufyan Thawri rahimahullah said: I have not treated anything more difficult for me than my intention, for it keeps turning upon me.

This is the concern and opinion of such a great Imam; how then will we distinguish (between sincerity and ostentation)? May Allah Ta’ala be our supporter and helper, ameen. For further details, see Hadith number (8884).
