It is narrated from ‘Ubada bin Nusi, who says that Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep. Someone asked him: Why are you weeping? He said: I remembered a hadith that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrate, and that made me weep. I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: I fear for my ummah regarding shirk and hidden desires. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Will your ummah commit shirk after you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, beware! They will not worship the sun, the moon, stones, or idols, but they will show off through their deeds, and the hidden desire is that a servant fasts in the morning, then some desire overcomes him and he breaks his fast.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … To perform an act, which is meant to be done for attaining the pleasure of Allah Almighty, with the intention of showing off, pretension, lack of sincerity, hypocrisy, ostentation, and seeking fame—these vile matters—this is called ostentation (riya’).

Sayyiduna Mahmud bin Labid radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Indeed, the thing I fear most for you is minor shirk (shirk al-asghar).” They asked: “And what is minor shirk?” He said: “Ostentation (riya’). Allah Almighty will say to the people who practiced it on the Day of Resurrection, when He recompenses the people: ‘Go to those for whom you used to show off in the world, and see if you find any reward with them.’” (Ahmad: 5/428-429, Sahihah: 951)

Imam Mubarakpuri rahimahullah said: To display acts of worship for the sake of people, so that they may praise the worshipper. Whereas Imam Ghazali rahimahullah said: The real meaning of ostentation (riya’) is to display praiseworthy and commendable qualities before people in order to gain a place in their hearts. Thus, the definition of ostentation is to perform acts of worship and obedience to Allah Almighty for the sake of showing people. (Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi: 3/279)

The ostentatious person, for a short time, becomes pious and righteous in the eyes of people, but he ruins his deed and wastes its reward; this is the repulsiveness and evil of ostentation. We should strive to develop sincerity in our acts of worship and completely avoid unethical matters such as ostentation, flattery, and sycophancy.

One who commits major shirk (shirk akbar) and clear shirk is an eternal inhabitant of Hell. Minor shirk, such as ostentation, is a forgivable sin; if it is not forgiven, then one will have to enter Hell temporarily to bear its punishment.

Nowadays is an age of competition, and among us, the basis of many actions is to show others and to display oneself—for example, participating in funeral prayers, inviting someone or accepting someone’s invitation, behaving with good manners towards someone—not for the love of Allah Almighty, but rather these actions are performed on the basis of personal friendship or enmity.
