Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Beware of oppression! For oppression will be (many) darknesses on the Day of Resurrection. Avoid foul speech, for indeed Allah Almighty does not like abusive and obscene language. And beware of intense love for wealth! For this very thing destroyed those before you; it commanded them to sever ties of kinship, so they severed them; it incited them to miserliness, so they became miserly; and it commanded them to commit evil, so they committed evil. A man stood up and said: Which Islam is best? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: That other Muslims are safe from your tongue and your hand.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Traits such as miserliness and greed are sufficient to render a person base. A miserly person becomes hard-hearted, becomes indifferent to the happiness and sorrow of others, and in order to save or increase his wealth, he becomes ready to undertake actions such as murder and bloodshed. While searching for dispensations in the Shariah, he begins to transgress the limits set by Allah Ta'ala. Intense love of wealth is called "shuhh." When the love of the world and its possessions exceeds all bounds and becomes intense in a person's heart, then he no longer distinguishes between the lawful (halal) and the unlawful (haram), nor does he refrain from shedding the blood of others. Such is the state of our society today, and this condition is a sign that there is no guarantee for the survival of such a society; sooner or later, it will inevitably face destruction.

A single act of oppression committed in this world will become the cause of many darknesses on the Day of Resurrection. For example, if a person commits treachery regarding a cow, he will come to the Plain of Gathering (Mahshar) carrying that cow on his shoulders, while the cow will be bellowing. The same applies to every animal and other acts of treachery. To place something out of its proper time or place is called oppression (zulm); in this regard, committing evil deeds and being negligent in the fulfillment of obligatory duties (fara'id) and necessary acts (wajibat) is also oppression.
