Hadith 9675

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the major sins, or he was asked about them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Associating partners with Allah, killing a soul, and disobeying parents. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Shall I not inform you of the greatest of sins? Then he said: It is false speech. Or he said: It is false testimony. Imam Shu’bah says: The predominant opinion is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned false testimony.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Major sins (kabirah): Every sin which has been declared as major (kabirah) in the Shari‘ah, or upon which Allah Ta‘ala has threatened punishment, wrath, and curse in the Hereafter, or for which a prescribed legal punishment (hadd) is applied in this world, or from which there is a strict prohibition, or whose perpetrator has been declared a transgressor (fasiq).

The fundamental point is the first one: that every sin which has been called kabirah in the Book and the Sunnah is a major sin; regarding the rest of the sins, it cannot be decisively stated whether they are major (kabirah) or minor (saghirah). Because this is purely a religious matter, and it is not appropriate to speak about it based on analogy or personal opinion. (Abdullah Rafiq)
