Narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub Fazari (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say to his companions among the things he would instruct: “Has any of you seen a dream?” Then, according to Allah’s will, those who had seen would narrate. One morning, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: “Last night, two angels came to me. They woke me up and said: ‘Come.’ So I went with them. We came to a man who was lying down, and another man was standing over him with a large stone. He would strike his head with the stone, crushing it. The stone would roll away, and when he went to retrieve it and returned, the man’s head would be restored as before. Then he would do to him what he had done the first time. I said: ‘Glory be to Allah! Who are these two?’ They said to me: ‘Move on, move on.’ So I went with them.
Then we came to a man lying on his back, and another person was standing over him with an iron hook. He would come to one side of his face and tear his mouth, nostrils, and eyes up to the back of his head. Then he would go to the other side of his face and do the same. Meanwhile, the first side would be restored as before. Then he would return to it and tear it again as he had done the first time. I said: ‘Glory be to Allah! Who are these two?’ They said: ‘Move on, move on.’ So I went with them.
Then we reached something like a furnace, in which there was noise and voices. I looked into it and saw naked men and women. Flames of fire would rise from beneath them, and they would scream and cry out. I said to them: ‘Who are these people?’ They said: ‘Move on, move on.’ So we moved on and came to a river, the color of which was red like blood. In it, a man was swimming, and as he swam, he would come to another man who had collected stones. When he reached him, he would open his mouth, and the other would throw a stone into it. Then he would start swimming again, and whenever he returned, he would open his mouth, and the other would throw a stone into it. I said: ‘What is this?’ They said to me: ‘Move on, move on.’ So we moved on and came to a man of the most hideous appearance. If you were to see him, you would find him the most repulsive in appearance. He had a fire with him, which he was kindling and running around it. I said to them: ‘What is this?’ They said to me: ‘Move on, move on.’
So we moved on and reached a beautiful garden with green grass, in which were flowers of every color of spring. In the middle of the garden stood a man so tall that I could hardly see his head because of his height. Around him were many beautiful and handsome children. I said to them: ‘Who is this, and who are these?’ They said: ‘Move on, move on.’ So we moved on and came to a large and expansive tree, very big and beautiful. They said to me: ‘Climb it.’ So we climbed it and reached a city, one brick of which was gold and one was silver. We went to the gate of the city and asked for it to be opened. So it was opened for us, and we entered. Among the people there, some were very beautiful and some were ugly. Then the two said to them: ‘Go and fall into that river.’ It was a small, flowing, extremely white river. So they went and entered the river, and when they returned, their ugliness had disappeared, and they had become completely beautiful.
Then the two said to me: ‘This is the Garden of Eden, and this is your place.’ Then I looked up and saw a palace like a white cloud. They said to me: ‘This is your place.’ I said to them: ‘May Allah bless you, let me enter it.’ But they said: ‘Not now, but you will surely enter it.’ Then I said to them: ‘Tonight I have seen very strange things. Now tell me, what were these things?’ They said: ‘Now we will tell you. The man whose head was being crushed was a person who learned the Qur’an and then abandoned it and slept through the obligatory prayers. The man whose mouth, eyes, and nostrils were being torn to the back of his head was one who lied in his house, and his lie would reach the horizons of the world. The naked men and women you saw in something like a well were adulterers. The man swimming in the river and having stones thrown into his mouth was a usurer. The hideous man kindling the fire was the keeper of Hell, his name is Malik. The tall man in the garden was Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and the children around him were those who died upon the natural disposition (fitrah). At that time, some Muslims said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Were there also the children of the polytheists among them?’ He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Yes, the children of the polytheists were also among them.’ The people, some of whom were beautiful and some ugly, were those who had done both good and bad deeds, but Allah had forgiven them.”
