Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Wear a waistcloth, drape a sheet, and wear shoes, and abandon socks and trousers; likewise, throw away (the stirrups from mounts) and mount by jumping, live like Ma'ad bin Adnan, shoot arrows at targets, avoid luxury and adopting the fashions of non-Arabs, and stay away from silk, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not wear silk, except this much. At the same time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) indicated with two fingers.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Wearing leather socks (khuffayn) and trousers (shalwar) is permissible; consider the following hadith:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah radi Allahu anhu, he says: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came out to a group of elderly Ansar whose beards were white. He said: “O group of Ansar! Dye your beards red and yellow, and oppose the People of the Book.” He (Abu Umamah) said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah! The People of the Book wear trousers (sarawil) and do not wear waist wrappers (izar).” The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Wear trousers and waist wrappers, and oppose the People of the Book.” He said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah! The People of the Book wear leather socks (khuffayn) and do not wear shoes.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Wear leather socks and shoes, and oppose the People of the Book.” He said: We said, “O Messenger of Allah! The People of the Book trim their beards and let their mustaches grow long.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Trim your mustaches and let your beards grow, and oppose the People of the Book.” (Musnad Ahmad: 22639)

The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam entered upon the elderly men of the Ansar; their beards had become white. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: O group of Ansar! Dye your beards red and yellow, and oppose the People of the Book. They said: O Messenger of Allah! The People of the Book wear trousers and do not wear waist wrappers. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: You should wear trousers and waist wrappers, and oppose the People of the Book. They said: O Messenger of Allah! The People of the Book wear leather socks and do not wear shoes. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: You should wear leather socks and shoes, and oppose the People of the Book. They said: O Messenger of Allah! The People of the Book trim their beards and let their mustaches grow long. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: You should trim your mustaches and let your beards grow, and oppose the People of the Book. (Musnad Ahmad: 22639)

Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu forbade the use of stirrups in order to maintain strength and vigor.

Ma‘ad bin Adnan was the ancestor of the Arabs; he lived a life of poverty and hardship. In this statement, in reality, indulgence in luxury is being prohibited, the harms of which are evident.

Various commentators have mentioned different reprehensible customs of the non-Arabs; a few are as follows:
Women leaving their chests and heads uncovered, using red cushions and garments, and using silk for cushions, displaying fine and thin clothing, wearing tight clothes, and paying much attention to prosperity and luxury.

The fundamental rule is that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has determined all acts of worship and permissible and impermissible matters in his Shari‘ah; one should remain bound to these alone. Also, in the time of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, there were clear differences between the cultures of the Arabs and the non-Arabs. Now, even the indulgence in luxury and acts of disobedience among the Arabs has advanced greatly.
