It is narrated from Iyad bin Ghatif, he says: We went to visit Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as he was ill, and his wife Tuheefa was sitting by his head. I asked: How did Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) spend the night? The woman said: By Allah! He spent the night with reward and recompense, but Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) himself said: I did not spend it with reward, while he was facing the wall. Then he turned towards the people and said: Why do you not ask about the thing I have said? They said: You have not said anything astonishing that we should ask about it. Then he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever spends extra things in the protection of Allah, he will get seven hundred times the reward, and whoever spends on himself and his family, or visits a sick person, or removes something harmful, he will get ten times the reward for that good deed, and fasting is a shield, but only as long as the fasting person does not tear it, and whoever Allah tests through the trial of his body, his sins will be forgiven through that hardship.
