Hadith 9608

Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever takes up residence in the wilderness becomes hard-hearted; whoever pursues hunting becomes heedless; whoever comes to the door of the king falls into tribulation; and the closer a person gets to the king, the farther he becomes from Allah Almighty.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Among Bedouins, villagers, and people of the wilderness, qualities such as roughness and uncouthness are found; their capacity to accept the truth is less, whereas among city dwellers, refinement and gentleness are more prevalent, and the soil of their hearts and minds is fertile. A person who sets out in search of hunting never finds satisfaction; greed, avarice, and preoccupation continue to increase, and he goes farther and farther afield, becoming heedless of the performance of prayer (salah) and other rights.

A person who becomes entangled in the courts of sultans and kings becomes distant from the truth and close to falsehood; now he must move and act at the mere signal of the rulers, flatter and fawn over them, and upon seeing their bounties, he will consider the favors Allah Most High has bestowed upon him as insignificant. He will remain silent at the acts of disobedience occurring in the courts of the great, and gradually, Islamic honor will be lost, and ultimately, such a person will belong neither here nor there, becoming the embodiment of “neither did he find God, nor union with the beloved,” and will be disgraced in this world and the Hereafter. The pious predecessors (salaf salihin) considered it safer to stay away from kings and to strengthen their ties with the simple-hearted masses; Allah Most High also honored them with the best outcomes, and even today the world sings their praises.

As for the person who goes to the rulers for the purpose of preaching (tabligh) and fulfills the requirements of preaching without committing any act of disobedience, his case is different.
