Hadith 9584

Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "Give me some concise and comprehensive advice." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you perform prayer, perform it as if it is your last prayer (of your life), and do not say anything for which you would have to apologize tomorrow, and be completely hopeless (and independent) of what people possess."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), has encompassed the tranquility of an entire lifetime within three pieces of advice. No human being is aware of his own death; therefore, he should perform every prayer considering it to be his last prayer in life, and offer it in the most beautiful manner possible, so that if death comes to him after this prayer, then that very prayer will suffice for his salvation. In the second advice, the Lawgiver (alayhis salam) has taught the safeguarding of the tongue, so that one does not have to face any kind of embarrassment or regret later. It is the tongue through which a person’s character is revealed; if there is dignity in the tongue, then there will be seriousness in the entire being, and if the tongue is accustomed to grazing in every pasture, then the body too becomes shameless. In the third advice, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has instructed to avoid blameworthy traits such as greed and avarice, because due to these vile qualities, baseness and inferiority develop within a person, which lower his rank and status even below that of animals. A person should place his trust in Allah Ta’ala and consider Him as the Provider (Razzaq), and should not set his sights on the wealth and property of others. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radi Allahu anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Whoever is afflicted with hunger and expresses it before people, his hunger will not be alleviated; and whoever expresses it before Allah Ta’ala, Allah Ta’ala will grant him sustenance, whether sooner or later.
