Syedna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you hear a man saying that people have perished, then he himself will be the most perished among them.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Imam Nawawi said: It is forbidden for a person to say that people have perished if he considers himself to be good, regards others as insignificant, and thinks himself superior to them. However, if a person observes that religiosity among people has diminished, and out of sorrow and religious zeal and honor these words come to his tongue, then there is no harm in it. Scholars such as Imam Malik ibn Anas, Imam Humaydi, and Imam Khattabi have explained this hadith in this very detail. (Riyadh as-Salihin)
In our society, the condition of most people is such that they consider themselves good and not only regard others as insignificant, but are also engaged in searching for their faults and giving a different interpretation to their good deeds.
One day, I was sitting with an irreligious man, and the mention of a fairly religious person came up. I should have praised him due to his Islamic qualities, but the gentleman, solely on the basis that the person had not returned a loan as promised, spoke extremely ill of him, while he himself, in his own estimation, considered himself religious, even though he was a person of the worst conduct. Nowadays, this is the attitude of the majority.
