Hadith 9538

Qais says: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, praised and glorified Allah Almighty, and then said: O people! Indeed, you recite this verse: O you who believe! Take care of your own selves. If you follow the right guidance, no harm can come to you from those who go astray. (Surah Al-Ma'idah: 105), but we heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Indeed, when people see evil and do not change it, it is near that Allah Almighty will inflict a general punishment upon them.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Some people, due to the apparent wording, have developed the misconception that if one reforms oneself, that is sufficient, and enjoining good (amr bil-ma‘ruf) and forbidding evil (nahi ‘anil-munkar) are not necessary. However, this meaning is not correct, because the obligation of enjoining good and forbidding evil is also extremely important. If a Muslim abandons this very obligation, then how will he remain steadfast upon guidance?

The correct meaning of this verse is that if, despite your advising, people do not adopt the path of righteousness or do not refrain from evil, then this will not be harmful to you, provided that you yourself remain steadfast upon righteousness and abstain from evil.
