Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in an army. A man passed by a low-lying place where there was also a spring of water. He thought that he should withdraw from the world and settle there; this water and the surrounding greenery would suffice for him. Then he decided that he would go to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and present this matter before him; if you permitted, then fine, otherwise not. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I passed by such-and-such a low-lying place; its water and greenery could suffice for my livelihood. I thought that I should withdraw from the world and settle there. (What do you think?) The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have not been sent with Judaism or Christianity; I have been sent with a gentle and easy Shari’ah. By Him in Whose hand is my soul! To go forth in the morning or evening in the path of Allah is better than the world and whatever is in it, and to stand in the ranks before the enemy is better than sixty years of prayer.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In other authentic narrations, monasticism (rahbaniyyah) has been condemned, and the time spent in striving in jihad has been declared better than sixty years of worship by another person. For details of these narrations, refer to the hadith under study in Musnad Ahmad (Muhaqqiq).
Rahbaniyyah (Monasticism): To sever oneself from the world and worldly attachments and become absorbed in the worship of Allah Ta’ala in some jungle or desert. The Christians invented this practice, which Islam has declared to be incorrect.
To strive with full effort against rebels, transgressors, atheists, and irreligious people for the protection and support of the religion of Islam and for the exaltation of Allah’s word is called jihad fi sabilillah (striving in the path of Allah). This is an extremely virtuous and magnificent act. The Prophetic hadith is that the feet covered with dust in the path of Allah become free from the fire of Hell. (Bukhari: 2811) If one gets the opportunity to perform jihad in one’s lifetime, it should be considered a blessing and good fortune; otherwise, at the very least, it is obligatory to have a firm intention for jihad fi sabilillah, and when the opportunity arises, one should by no means avoid it. Islamic life is connected to this very spirit of sacrifice.
