It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to his companions. In one narration, it is mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the mosque and they were sitting in circles. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: What is the reason that I see you in the form of different groups, while they were sitting?
Hadith Takhrij«أخرجه مسلم: 430 ، (انظر مسند أحمد ترقيم الرسالة: 20874 ترقیم بيت الأفكار الدولية: 21166»
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Imam Nawawi said: In this blessed hadith, group formation (i.e., forming separate groups) is prohibited, and gathering together, completing the first rows, and joining the rows have been commanded. (Sharh al-Nawawi li-Muslim: 4/153)
It is better that this hadith be interpreted in light of the meaning of the following hadith:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As radi Allahu anhu, he says: "And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade forming circles before the prayer on the day of Jumu‘ah." … The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam prohibited making circles before the prayer on the day of Jumu‘ah. (Abu Dawud: 991, Nasa’i: 707)
Similarly, forming circles before the prayer will also be prohibited.
If, apart from these two situations, it becomes necessary to sit in different circles and gatherings for the purpose of teaching and training, then it will be permissible.
