It is narrated from Abu Khasib, he says: I was sitting when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) arrived. A man stood up from his gathering to give him space, but he did not sit in that place; rather, he sat somewhere else. That man said: If you had sat in my place, would there have been any harm upon you? He replied: Neither do I wish to sit in your seat nor in anyone else’s seat, after what I myself witnessed in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The detail is that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so another man stood up from his gathering for his sake, and he was about to sit in his place, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him from sitting there.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … But consider the following hadith and its explanation.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “No man should stand up for another man from his seat, but rather make room in the gathering, Allah will make room for you.” (Musnad Ahmad: 2/483, Sahihah: 228)
From this hadith, it is understood that those sitting in a gathering should not stand up for others, but rather should make space for them to sit.
Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah writes: In this hadith, there is clear evidence that it is not from the etiquettes of Islam for a person to stand up from his seat out of respect for someone else so that he may sit in his place. Rather, he should make room for the newcomer. When people are sitting on the ground, it is possible to make space in the gathering, but in the case of chairs, it is impossible. In any case, standing up for someone’s sake would be in opposition to this hadith of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. This is why Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu disliked that a person should stand up from his seat and another should sit there. The words of the aforementioned hadith, “No man should stand up for another man…” at the very least indicate dislike (karahah), because here the negation is in the sense of prohibition, otherwise the original implication of prohibition is impermissibility (tahrim). And Allah knows best.
The wording of a hadith from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu is as follows: The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “No man should make another man stand up from his seat and then sit in it.” (Muslim)
It should be noted that there is no contradiction between these two ahadith, because in one, making another stand up is prohibited, and in the other, standing up oneself is prohibited.
