Hadith 9495

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When people gather somewhere and then disperse without remembering Allah Almighty, they will be like those who got up from beside a dead donkey.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … To recite the tasbihat (glorifications), tahlilat (declarations of Allah’s oneness), takbirat (proclamations of Allah’s greatness), and tahmidat (expressions of praise) of Allah Ta’ala and to remember Him in this way is not only a cause of immense reward, but neglecting it is a cause of regret and remorse. A person should remember Allah Ta’ala in some manner during the various states of his body—whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down.

The ability of our body to lie down, sit, and stand is a great favor from Allah Ta’ala, for which He has demanded His remembrance.

To not remember Allah Ta’ala in a gathering, or to not send prayers of mercy and peace upon the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), is tantamount to inviting the punishment of Allah Ta’ala. It is up to Allah Ta’ala’s will whether He forgives this negligence or holds one accountable for it.

Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah says: These ahadith indicate that it is obligatory (wajib) to remember Allah Ta’ala and to send blessings (salat) upon the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in every gathering. The reasons for this indication are as follows:

Firstly: Then if Allah Ta’ala wills, He may punish them, and if He wills, He may forgive them. This statement can only be made when an obligation (wajib) has been abandoned, and its abandonment is a sin.

Secondly: Even if they enter Paradise due to the reward of (other) deeds. This shows that the person who does not remember Allah Ta’ala or send blessings upon the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in a gathering is deserving of entering Hell, although it is possible that due to the reward of his faith, he may be admitted to Paradise.

(Thirdly) They rise from it like a rotten donkey. This analogy necessitates that their action is vile, and such an analogy can only be related to something that is unlawful (haram).

It is necessary for every Muslim to be alert and not to become heedless of remembering Allah Ta’ala and sending blessings upon the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in every gathering; otherwise, this negligence will be a cause of loss and regret for him.

Manawi said in (Fayd al-Qadir): From this, the emphasis is established on remembering Allah Ta’ala and sending blessings upon the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) when standing up from a gathering. Any words can be used for this remembrance and salutation, but the most complete form of remembrance is the supplication of expiation for the gathering (du‘a’ kafarat al-majlis):

((Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk.))

And for sending blessings, the salutation from the tashahhud should be recited. (Sahihah: 80)
