Hadith 9482

It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you are present with a deceased person or a sick person, say good things, because whatever you say, the angels say Ameen to it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … That is, at the time of death, prayers for mercy and forgiveness should be made for the deceased, the bereaved should be advised to be patient and to avoid wailing and lamentation, and for the sick, prayers for healing should be made and they should be encouraged by giving them glad tidings of health and well-being.

The remaining part of this hadith is as follows: "When Abu Salamah died, I came to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said: O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, Abu Salamah has died. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: 'Say: O Allah, forgive me and him, and grant me from him a good substitute.' She said: So I said it, and Allah gave me in exchange someone better for me than him—Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam."

… Sayyidah Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha says: When my husband, Sayyiduna Abu Salamah radi Allahu anhu, passed away, I came to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said: O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, Abu Salamah has passed away. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: Then recite this supplication: O Allah! Forgive me and him, and grant me a good substitute for him. So Allah, the Exalted, gave me in exchange such a substitute who was much better for me than him, that is, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
