Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A person is upon the religion of his friend, so each of you should look at whom he befriends.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There is a proverb: “A melon takes on the color of another melon when placed beside it.”

The meaning of this hadith is that, whether one wishes it or not, every friend is compelled to adopt the lifestyle, habits, manners, and conduct of his companion. Those who perform prayers (namazi people), by attending the gatherings of those who do not pray, end up abandoning their own prayers, and by joining them in listening to singing and music, are compelled to disobey Allah Ta’ala. Therefore, one should reflect carefully before forming friendships; if someone’s religion and character are pleasing, then he should be taken as a friend. A good person becomes infamous simply because bad people are his friends. It should be kept in mind that approaching a bad person with good manners in order to advise him is one thing, and forming a friendship with someone is another matter altogether.
