Hadith 9436

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! A person loves another person, but does not have the strength to do deeds like his deeds? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A person will be with the one whom he loves. I have never seen the companions as happy for anything as they were for this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), except for Islam. Then Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So we love the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and do not have the strength to do as many deeds as he did, so if we attain his company, that will be sufficient for us.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In this, besides the virtue of having love for people of goodness and righteousness, there is also mention of Allah Ta’ala’s grace and bounty, that due to loving them, He will elevate those of lesser rank and join them with the beloved ones in higher stations. However, along with this glad tidings, this hadith also contains a warning for those who maintain special relationships and affection with people of bad character, and who, in the absence of true love, make claims of sincere affection through flattery, sycophancy, and duplicity; it is possible that their resurrection may also be with them.
