It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Aidh bin ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Salman, Sayyiduna Suhaib, and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with them) were sitting among some people when Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan bin Harb (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by. These people said: “The swords of Allah have not fulfilled their due in taking the neck of the enemy of Allah.” Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Do you say this about a chief and elder of the Quraysh? (Be mindful).” Then, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of all this, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O Abu Bakr! Perhaps you have angered them, and if you have angered them, then your Lord will also be angry with you.” Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) returned to them and said: “O our brothers! Perhaps you are angry with me?” They said: “No, O Abu Bakr! May Allah forgive you.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Reflect that a great personality like Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu is being cautioned regarding the rights of the poor Companions, even though in the incident that occurred, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu was in the right. This is because the comment made by Sayyiduna Salman, Sayyiduna Suhayb, and Sayyiduna Bilal meant that Abu Sufyan should have been killed before accepting Islam, whereas this comment was not entirely appropriate, since now Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan radi Allahu anhu had become a Muslim.
