Hadith 9255

(Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever is afflicted with poverty and then presents his poverty to people, his poverty will not be fulfilled; and whoever presents it to Allah Almighty, He will soon enrich him—either by a swift death or by quickly granting him wealth.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Being who is capable of fulfilling the needs and necessities of the entire creation, and who never closes the door of His giving, He alone is worthy of being remembered in times of need and necessity. Wahb ibn Munabbih said to a man who came to the kings: “Woe to you! Do you go to the one who closes his door upon you and conceals his wealth from you, and leave the One who opens His door for you in the middle of the night and the middle of the day, and manifests His wealth to you…?” That is, destruction be upon you! Do you go to the one who shuts his door in your face and hides his riches from you, and you abandon the One who opens His door for you even in the middle of the night and the middle of the day, and displays His wealth to you?

In reality, man is incapable of understanding his own benefits and harms; his duty is to make effort. Therefore, he should understand that the means of fulfilling needs is not merely to start asking people, but first and foremost, to call upon Allah Ta‘ala with complete certainty.

Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, summarizing the words of Shaykh Mahmood Subki (al-Manhal al-‘Adhb: 9/283), said: “Ajal ‘ajil” (an early death) has two meanings: (1) A close relative of the needy person will die, from whom he will inherit. (2) The needy person himself will die and thus become completely free from the need for wealth. The meaning of “ghina ‘ajil” is that Allah Ta‘ala will make him prosperous and self-sufficient in some way. In the following verse, the meaning of this hadith is explained: {وَمَنْ یَّتَّقِ اللّٰہَ یَجْعَلْ لَّہٗمَخْرَجًا۔وَیَرْزُقُہٗ مِنْ حَیْثُ لَا یَحْتَسِبُ} (Surah at-Talaq: 2, 3) … “And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out (from trials and difficulties), and will provide for him from where he does not expect.” (Sahihah: 2787)

In this statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, there is encouragement that in times of need and necessity, one should turn to Allah Ta‘ala, and in every possible situation, avoid spreading one’s hand in front of people. In this lies the true pleasure and enjoyment of life.

Nowadays, people have raised their standard of living above their income, and now, to maintain it, they do not hesitate to use any means. We should stretch our feet according to the means of life and continue to thank Allah Ta‘ala. If there is patience and contentment, then instead of curry, one can eat chutney and pickles, and instead of parathas, eat dry bread; instead of ten or twelve suits, make do with three or four; and instead of serving guests expensive and unsatisfying drinks, serve them ordinary beverages. In all these cases, one can still thank Allah Ta‘ala and manage the circle of life according to one’s pocket.
