(Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If you place your trust in Allah as He deserves to be trusted, He will provide for you as He provides for the bird; do you not see that the bird goes out in the morning with an empty stomach and returns in the evening full and satisfied.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Tawakkul means that, after utilizing permissible means and resources, one should strive to attain one’s objective, but the real reliance should be upon Allah’s Essence, because unless Allah’s will is present, even the means and resources can accomplish nothing. Nevertheless, it is also necessary to adopt apparent means, because Allah has commanded us to do so, just as birds do not remain sitting in their nests, but rather go out in search of sustenance, roaming about, and then Allah provides them with sustenance.
Nowadays, it is often observed that most traders and shopkeepers become so engrossed in their trade and shopkeeping that they neglect many rights of Allah and His servants, including prayer. In fact, it should be said that some people, driven by greed for wealth, lose all distinction between halal (lawful) and haram (unlawful), and even attempt to make the unlawful permissible by employing various tricks. In reality, such people have become extremely weak in faith; they should understand that it is not their business, but Allah who is the Provider of sustenance, and by obeying Him, they should fulfill the true right of tawakkul upon Him.
Shaykh al-Islam Sabuni has beautifully composed these verses:
Tawakkal ‘ala ar-Rahman fi kulli hajatin aradta fa inna Allah yaqdi wa yuqaddir
Wa qad yahlaku al-insanu min wajhin aminahu wa yanjū bi idhnillah min haythu yahdhar
So, for every need you intend, place your trust in ar-Rahman, for Allah decides and decrees the measure. When the Lord of the Throne wills a matter for His servant, He brings it to him, and the servant has nothing of what he himself intends. Sometimes a person is destroyed from a direction in which he feels secure, and by Allah’s command, he is saved from where he fears.
